Contents
The course provides the basic skills to interpret a cytological and histological samples obtained by neoplasia of pets. Through the study of clinical cases, we will define the diagnostic algorithms and the gradation systems of the main round cells tumors, mesenchymal tumors and epithelial tumors.

Educational objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge (know) to construct a cytological and histopathological diagnostic algorithm for the main dog and cat neoplasms.
Know-how. At the end of the course the student will acquire ability to:
- interpret a cytological and histopathological report that describes the basic characteristics of a round, mesenchymal, epithelial cell neoplasm;
- establish the methods of sampling a neoplasm and identify the excision margins;
- recognize the main cytological and histological characteristics of the aforementioned categories of tumors;
- gradation systems and prognostic markers of the most important neoplasms selected in each category.
Prerequisites
Although there are no compulsory propedeuticities according to
regulation, it is strongly advised that the student attending the course
has already sat the examinations of veterinary pathology and special
pathology and veterinary medical pathology.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into 5 days. From day 1 to day 4 an introductory first hour will be provided on the criteria of cytological and histological interpretation of round-cell tumors, mesenchymal and epithelial tumors. Subsequently, the necropsy room of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Pathology Service laboratories will be used, respectively for the collection and preparation of cytological smears by the students, the identification and study of the margins of tumor excision, the evaluation of the cytological and histological preparations under multi-tested microscope. On the fifth day the diagnostic algorithms of 6 oncological clinical cases will be studied in interactive mode.

Learning verification modality
The course does not provide a final exam, as the current Learning
Organization. Therefore, the student's learning is individually tested in the various steps of the cytological and histological diagnostic procedure of the oncological cases discussed
Extended program
The course will be organized as follows:
- First day (5h). General criteria for the preparation and interpretation of cytological smears from neoplastic lesions (1 h); exercise on cadavers or organs of cytological sampling, coloring of the smears and microscopic evaluation of the quality of the smears (1h); exercise on skin samples to identify the margins of a neoplasm (0.5h); construction of a cytological and histological report (0.5h); interpretation of cytological characters of round cell tumors and of mesenchymal and epithelial tumors (2h).
- Second day (5h). Cytology and histopathology of round cell tumors; frontal lesson (1h); student evaluation of 3 examples of round cell tumors (2h); comparison under the microscope with the teacher (1h).
- Third day (5h). Cytology and histopathology of mesenchymal tumors; frontal lesson (1h); student evaluation of 3 examples of mesenchymal neoplasia (2h); comparison under the microscope with the teacher (1h).
- Fourth day (5h). Cytology and histopathology of epithelial tumors; frontal lesson (1h); student evaluation of 3 examples of epithelial neoplasia (2h); comparison under the microscope with the teacher (1h).
- Fifth day (5h). Presentation and interactive discussion of 6 complete oncological cases. Construction of the diagnostic procedure.
