- Contents
- Students will be able to manage an anesthetic / analgesic protocol adequate to the clinical condition of the patient, focusing on equine and some inputs on non-conventional and wild animals.
According to the caseload of the OVUD, the practical activity will be performed on clinical cases: from the preanesthetic evaluation to the anesthesia or sedation management, being able to adequately use clinical and instrumental monitoring during the surgical or diagnostic procedure. - Reference texts
- Not necessary, but if desiring to get more details on the equine species:

- Students will be able to manage an anesthetic / analgesic protocol adequate to the clinical condition of the patient, focusing on equine and some inputs on non-conventional and wild animals.
Students will become familiar with the execution of the principal loco-regional anesthetic techniques which account for the main multimodal analgesic approach in clinical practice. - Prerequisites
- To better understand and apply the procedures required in this course, it is necessary to have passed the exams of Veterinary Surgical Pathology, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary, and Pharmacology have attended the course of Veterinary Anesthesiology
- Teaching methods
- A theoretical part will be taken as introduction in each session supported by didactic material (slides)
According to the number of students, anesthetic procedures will be directly performed on animals referred to the OVUD requiring surgery or diagnostic procedures which require deep sedation/analgesia and for each case a clinical planning will be accurately discussed.
If no clinical cases will be available, interactive clinical cases will be discussed where patients with different diseases will be presented and will require a specific perioperative treatment from pre surgical management up to the best analgesic management possible for the post-operative time.
Wet-labs on equine specimens will be provided to allow students to practice on the main loco-regional techniques such as on head or epidural. - Other information
- This course includes also complementary didactic activity represented by meetings and seminars with PhD students, interns and students by planning and agreeing with the student during the ADE
- Learning verification modality
- Not applicable. This course considers only the presence at the professional course.
- Extended program
- The ADE foresees to carry out theoretical and practical activity of anesthesia and analgesia on clinical horses referred to OVUD for surgical problems, on anatomical specimens and on simulated cases.
