Educational objectives

Prerequisites
In order to better understand the topics of this course it is necessary to have already passed both the Veterinary Microbiology-Immunology and Veterinary Pathology exams. The knowledge acquired after studying these two subjects are a prerequisite for the student who wants to take this course.

As for the form of epidemiology, despite entered in the same teaching is done in the second year of the degree course in how this matter is one assessment tool for many disciplines and therefore is considered the basic course. To pass the biostatistics exam is an advisable prerequisite.

Learning verification modality
The exam of infectious diseases, prevention and animal health consists of an oral exam lasting about 60 minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding reached by the student on the theoretical and methodological implications mentioned in the program. The questions (3 for each module) cover infectious diseases of the horse, ruminants , pigs, dog and cat by evaluating the critical skills of the student, his ability to use all the knowledge and skills acquired and solution of concrete problems related to spreading of pathogens, prevention and control.
The student's ability to perform and interpret laboratory methods, a correct diagnostic algorithm and the respective differential diagnosis is also evaluated (evaluation of the acquired skills).
The student must demonstrate that he is able to distinguish the various infectious diseases (assessment of knowledge), to diagnose them (assessment of skills) and to know the most appropriate control measures, including the biosecurity standards (assessment of competences).
The exam is oral because the student must demonstrate to possess language properties (skills) and be able to independently organize the topics, as well as to have also acquired communication skills. The reasoning ability and the ability to make decisions also are evaluated (skills assessment). The presence of three examiners in the commission guarantees the reduction of the "halo" effect for this examination mode.
The test will be evaluated based on the following elements:

- argumentative and executive rigor: from <2 to 5 points

-completeness: from <2 to 5 points

- language properties: from <2 to 5 points

- depth of analysis and connection capacity: from <2 to 5 points

Each score corresponds to the following class of judgment:

<2 = insufficient (widespread and serious deficiencies, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; poor and inadequate language; difficult and not autonomous construction of the speech; failure or incorrect application of argumentative constraints and logical connections)

2 = mediocre (widespread deficiencies, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; poor and inadequate language; difficult and non-autonomous construction of the speech; sufficient orientation ability in the context of different infectious diseases)

3 = sufficient (some shortcomings, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; logical articulation of the discourse, but an excessively simple and essential exposition; autonomous construction of the discourse with a very summary of the contents; adequate but stunted application of constraints and logical connections)

4 = good (rare shortcomings, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; logical articulation of the argumentative path, autonomous construction of the speech with appropriate use of the specific language; complete application of the constraints and logical connections)

5 = excellent (absence of shortcomings, inconsistencies and errors in the argumentation; logical, clear and rich articulation of the argumentative path; autonomous construction of the speech with appropriate and complete use of the specific language; complete application of constraints and logical connections even with original choices)

Praise: presence of absolute argumentative, logical and linguistic mastery; autonomous, secure, rich and articulated construction of the speech, great ability to link different topics, with the presence of a significant original contribution deriving from the use of multiple study sources.

On the material of the lessons provided on the unistudium platform, at the end of each lesson the main questions on the topic are provided to help the student assess his own preparation (self-assessment).

This course also provides an exemption for the module of Veterinary Epidemiology (2nd year of the course). The exam consists of three oral questions with a total duration of approximately 30 minutes. Each question is worth 10 points out of 30 in the exam. The first question is aimed to evaluate the skill and to assess whether the candidate is able to analyze and critically review a scientific article of his choice, discussing the issues and problems arising from the article itself, through the tools provided with Evidence Based Medicine (assessment of competences). The second and third questions are aimed at ascertaining the acquisition of the main theoretical and methodological notions of epidemiology provided during the course (knowledge assessment). The ability to understand the difference between scientific approach and practical reasoning, the reasoning that leads to making decisions in Public Health, the strategies of Surveillance (assessment of knowledge and skills) is evaluated. The student must demonstrate to have acquired the ability to synthesize the data through the epidemiological measures studied, to use them appropriately and to know how to interpret them (assessment of competences). The student must know which are the main performances of a test in order to understand when to apply appropriately a diagnostic test or a screening test to a population or to a single subject (assessment of competences).

The student must demonstrate the ability to use the software and spreadsheets used or produced during the course exercises (assessment of skills).

The exam is oral because the student must also demonstrate to possess language properties (skills) and be able to autonomously organize the topics, as well as to have also acquired communication and reasoning skills (competence assessment). The presence of three examiners in the commission guarantees the reduction of the "halo" effect for this examination mode.

2 = mediocre (widespread deficiencies, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; poor and inadequate language; difficult and non-autonomous construction of the speech; sufficient orientation capacity within the program and the different topics)

3 = sufficient (some shortcomings, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; logical articulation of the discourse, but an excessively simple and essential exposition; autonomous construction of the discourse with a very summary summary of the contents; adequate but stunted application of constraints and logical connections)

4 = good (rare shortcomings, inconsistencies and errors in the argument; logical articulation of the argumentative path, autonomous construction of the speech with appropriate use of the specific language; complete application of the constraints and logical connections)

The test consists of three oral questions; each application weighs one third of the exam. The determination of the vote is based on knowledge (67%) and skills (33%) in relation to the division of the program into 67% theoretical and 33% practical.

On the material of the lessons provided on the unistudium platform, at the end of each lesson the main questions on the topic are provided to help the student assess his own preparation (self-assessment).
