Contents Kinematics and dynamics of mass points. Energy and work. Fluid mechanics. Waves and sound. Thermodynamics. Electrical phenomena. Electromagnetic radiation.
Reference texts D. Scannicchio, Fisica Biomedica, ed. EdiSES, Napoli.
Educational objectives This course aims to provide the student with the tools necessary for an adequate understanding of the phenomena of applied physics in the biomedical field, as well as to develop a methodological approach useful in the study of the other disciplines of the degree course and more generally for professional practice.

More in detail, and referring to the Dublin Descriptors for the didactic objectives (D1 Knowledge and understanding, D2 Applying knowledge and understanding, D3 Making judgements, D4 Communication Lifelong, D5 learning skills), the student will acquire the basic notions of classical physics (D1) in order to be able to correctly interpret the theoretical principles on which some analysis equipment, diagnostic tools and biological phenomena are based (D2). During the course the analysis and problem solving skills will be developed both by proposing numerical exercises that allow the student to apply the theoretical notions acquired and through the collaborative discussion of some physiological phenomena from a physical point of view (D3 e D4).
The skills acquired (both as knowledge and as a methodological approach) will be fundamental in the independent study of related disciplines and more generally in lifelong professional updating (D5).
Prerequisites None
Teaching methods Frontal lectures in the classroom with the aid of slides and short movies to convey basic information of classical physics with reference to the implications in the biological sector. The practical lessons will allow to apply the knowledge to the resolution of problems related to biology and to deepen, also on the proposal of the students, some issues of veterinary interest.
Extended program Physical quantities and the International System of Units. Scalar and vector quantities: sum and difference of vectors, product of a scalar by a vector; scalar product and vector product.
Kinematics of a mass point. Displacement and equation of motion. Speed and acceleration. Equation of uniform rectilinear motion, uniformly accelerated motion and uniform circular motion.
Dynamics of a mass point. The laws of dynamics. Mass and weight. The inclined plane. Static and dynamic friction. Elastic force. Harmonic motion.
Energy and work. Potential and kinetic energy. Mechanical energy theorem. Power.
Fluid mechanics: continuity equation; Bernoulli's theorem; Stevino's principle; Pascal's law; pressure unit of measure; viscous fluids; the circulatory system and blood pressure.
Temperature, heat and internal energy. Physical change of state. Specific heat. Heat propagation. Thermal expansion. Thermometers. First and second law of thermodynamics. Metabolism and thermoregulation.
Electrical phenomena and applications: electric charge and Coulomb's law; electric field; electric potential; electric current and Ohm's laws; electrolytic solutions.
Sound and mechanical waves. Wave propagation. Ultrasound. Doppler effect.
Electromagnetic waves. Geometric Optics: refraction and reflection; refractive index; critical angle; lenses; microscope; eye. the mechanism of vision and the perception of colors. Electromagnetic spectrum. Ionizing radiation. Biological effects of ionizing radiation. Basics of radiation protection. Medical applications.
