The course provides the tools to tackle the major issues of veterinary oncology from an epidemiological, etiopathogenetic, diagnostic, prognostic point of view. Through a dynamic approach of oncological disease, the student will have the opportunity to observe a general vision of neoplastic progression with a careful evaluation of the pathologies that can aggravate the original oncological disease.

Educational objectives
The course aims to develop a learning process that allows the student to acquire an integrated view of the neoplastic disease agents implicated in the carcinogenic action up to the staging and gradation of the tumor.
D1. Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student must acquire:
- adequate knowledge of the main neoplastic diseases of domestic animals, with particular thought to cancer and to the peculiar characteristics of their biological behavior;
- knowledge of the main markers used in veterinary oncology;
- suitable ability to evaluate the epidemiological aspects of neoplasms (also through the use of the Animal Cancer Register);
- knowledge of biological behavior and of the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the tumors prevailing in veterinary clinical practice: lymphoma, mast cell tumour, hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma.

D2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
At the end of the training activity the student will know:
- provide for an interpretation of the diagnostic data;
- formulate diagnostic oncological algorithms;
- interact with the various figures who are involved in diagnosis and therapy in veterinary oncology (pathologist, radiologist, surgeon, pharmacologist, hematologist, etc.).
D4. Communicative ability
At the end of the training activity, the student will be able to communicate with his / her interlocutors, in a clear and effective way, the knowledge acquired, the use of an appropriate language.

D5. Ability to learn
The student must progressively make autonomous in his training path, acquiring the ability to refine and deepen his knowledge, identifying bibliographic sources through their critical reading.
Although there are no mandatory prerequisites according to the standard, it is recommended that the student participating to the course has already taken the veterinary pathology, medical and surgical veterinary exams.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into 5 days.
Each meeting will include a first part of the various oncology topics indicated in the training objectives and will take up half the time available; the other part will be devoted to the discussion of the topics presented in the presence of colleagues working in veterinary oncology, accredited by academic titles or awards by European colleges

Learning verification modality
Since there is no final exam, the knowledge and the skills will be assessed through the discussion of topics or oncological cases that will be elaborated by the students according to a training in stages that mimics the diagnostic process.
Extended program
The course will be developed in the following ways:

- First day (5 h) - agents involved in the determinism of the main cancers in animals: viruses, chemical and physical agents, their investigation methods and preventive strategies.

- Second day (5 h): comparative aspects concerning the epidemiology of tumors. The meeting will develop through the presence of a veterinary epidemiologist of the Animal Cancer Registry of the Umbria Region and an epidemiologist of the Population Cancer Registry of the Department of Medicine - UNIPG

- Third day (5h): genetic, epigenetic and biomolecular aspects of neoplasms. The meeting will be held with the participation of geneticists and molecular biologists who work in the field of oncology.

- Fourth day (5h): staging and grading of the tumor. After an introduction on these strategic oncological aspects, a comparison will take place between veterinary pathologist and veterinary oncologist for the validation of these two procedures.

- Fifth day (5 h): students will be invited to check their learning through the observation and comment of some cancer cases about malignancies frequently found in veterinary medicine.
