Educational objectives
D1 The course takes into consideration bees and their management as, in general, they are rarely treated in veterinary medicine courses. The aim is to make the student broaden theoretical knowledge and provide practical professional experiences in the beekeeping world.
Specifically, knowledge relating to:
- Biology of bees, hives, types of farming, management of colonies
- Bee diseases
- Biosecurity measures in beekeeping
- Health monitoring of hives to check the use of plant protection products in agriculture.
D2-D3 The understanding and application of this knowledge will be useful for a correct interpretation of the health status of the apiary. The application of good beekeeping practices make it possible to obtain quality hive products while also respecting the health of the consumer.
D4-D5 The verification of learning skills will be done on the farm through practical hypotheses that will also allow the assessment of communication skills
Prerequisites
In order to understand and be able to apply the knowledge acquired during ADE (Elective teaching activity), knowledge of microbiology and parasitology is useful.
Teaching methods
The course, which takes 25 hours and is organized as follows:
A theoretical part where knowledge relating to the biology of bees, types of farming, bee diseases, legislation in beekeeping and national beekeeping registry is provided or implemented
a practical application part that includes visits to farms with the aim of providing the student with the possibility of being able to measure himself in the solution of problems related to health management in the apiary.
