Educational objectives The learning outcomes are compliant with the provisions of the Degree Programme Regulations as published on the website: http: //www.med.unipg.it/ccl

The main knowledge that students will acquire include the:
- relevance of social and health effects of work-related accidents at work and occupational diseases;
- practice of prevention in the workplace;
- occupational diseases most frequently diagnosed in Italy;
The main skills that students will acquire consist of:
- ability to identify and assess health risks in some working environments;
- ability to interpret the results of laboratory and instrumental tests for the study of diseases of the respiratory system and the peripheral nervous system, and of occupational and environmental poisonings;
- ability to suspect and diagnose the main occupational diseases;
Prerequisites In order to be able to learn and apply in practice the principles of occupational medicine, it is useful that the student:
- has passed the examinations of chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, physiology and general pathology;
- is able to perform a history and physical examination;
- know the main symptoms and signs correlated with diseases of the respiratory system and the peripheral nervous system.
Teaching methods - lectures on all topics of the program. As regards those relating to occupational and environmental diseases and poisonings, clinical cases, wherever possible, will be discussed;
- theoretical / practical activities in the laboratory, ambulatory and hospital ward, focusing on the diagnosis of occupational pulmonary diseases and of occupational and environmental allergies;
- Inspection in one or more local industrial companies
Learning verification modality The exam will mainly concern on the issues of occupational medicine and occupational and environmental toxicology that were covered during the formal lectures and supplementary activities.
The exam will consist of one oral test, designed to verify the capacity for knowledge and understanding, the ability to apply the acquired skills and the ability of exposure.
During the discussion, lasting about 20-40 minutes, they will be discussed from 2 to 4 arguments concerning the teaching program.
Extended program Definition and objectives of Occupational Medicine. Work-related iniurjes and occupational diseases in Italy and Umbria. The 4 groups of risk factors.
Risk assessment and prevention at workplaces.
Environmental monitoring and exposure limit values. Biological Monitoring. The health surveillance.
Legislative Decree 81/08.
Occupational hazards in health care services.
The diagnostic in Occupational Medicine. The occupational risks as a cause or contributing factor to illness or aggravating pre-existing conditions.

Occupational lung diseases. Chronic obstructive lung disease by gases, vapors, fumes.
Work-related asthma. Extrinsic allergic alveolitis.
Silicosis and asbestosis. Siderosis.
Diseases caused by physical agents (eg, noise, vibrations, biomechanical overload of the upper limb).
Lead poisoning and other metal (chromium, cadmium) poisonings
Occupational poisonings due to gases and solvents (hexane, benzene, vinyl chloride monomer, trichlorethylene).

- Epidemiology, health effects and treatment of smoking tobacco, as well as its interactions with the occupational hazards.

The main skills that students will acquire consist of:
- ability to identify and assess health risks in some working environments;
- ability to interpret the results of laboratory and instrumental tests for the study of diseases of the respiratory system and the peripheral nervous system, and of occupational and environmental poisonings;
- ability to suspect and diagnose the main occupational diseases;
- Ability to perform a brief counseling for tobacco smoking cessation.
Prerequisites In order to be able to learn and apply in practice the principles of occupational medicine, it is useful that the student:
- has passed the examinations of chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, physiology and general pathology;
- is able to perform a history and physical examination;
- know the main symptoms and signs correlated with diseases of the respiratory system and the peripheral nervous system.

The exam will consist of one oral test, designed to verify the capacity for knowledge and understanding, the ability to apply the acquired skills and the ability of exposure.

Extended program Occupational risks in agriculture. Poisonings due to pesticides: general aspects and selected compounds.
Occupational and environmental poisoning by carbon monoxide.
Indoor air quality and health; sick building syndrome.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and work.
Tobacco smoking at work.
Work-related psychosocial risks: stress, mobbing and bullying.
