Contents
The course aims to provide the epistemological, technical and cultural foundations of the Theory of Translation, with particular reference to the different fields of professional translation, the history of the theory and the translation techniques used in the various professional fields, as well as useful technologies in the current array of this discipline.
In this way, the complex multidisciplinary framework on which the translation practice rests, ranging from the challenges of electronic translation to the ethics of the translator, will be defined in a diachronic and synchronic trajectory. We will also try to highlight the importance, for the translator, of possessing, and improving over time, the knowledge of a syntactic and pragmatic order, both in the target language and in one's mother tongue, so as to be able to manage the complexity of the text, supporting its communicative effectiveness.
The primary purpose of the course remains, however, the development of critical and responsible thinking and the autonomy of the subject with respect to interpretative and professional potential.

Educational objectives
The course provides the essential notions for practicing the translation activity or getting to know its theoretical, technical and applied aspects. This is to ensure that students have the parameters and techniques to deal with texts referring to different textual genres and with different degrees of difficulty, regardless of the working languages, and are able with experience to develop a systematic approach to translation.
At the end of the course, students must be able to:
- recognize the characteristics of a text and of textual genres, with particular reference to the languages ¿¿studied and to Italian;
- identify the nodal points and critical elements of a potentially complex text from a translation point of view (e.g., anaphoras, ellipses, collocations, nominalizations, etc.);
- know the most diffused IT tools to support the translator's work (e.g., corpora, electronic dictionaries, glossaries, translation memories).

Linguistic and textual analysis skills.
Teaching methods
Lessons and exercises on selected texts.

Extended program
The course is divided into two modules.
The first module concerns the main theories elaborated during the history of translation and which constitute the methodological basis of translation practice.
The second module concerns the current most diffused theories of translation and the different techniques adopted according to the type of text to be translated. Theoretical reflections and practical examples are proposed, guiding the student to identify some of the main problems in translation.
