Contents
The meeting of cultures; ancient myths and biblical myths (16th-19th centuries)

The course aims to offer students the possibility of approaching texts of French literature, from the 16th to the 20th century through an in-depth analysis which should give them the possibility of mobilizing their knowledge to apply them in very specific situations.
The poetry of the 16th century, in particular the poetry of Joachim Du Bellay, will give them the opportunity to question texts rich in elements that come from the Greco-Latin myth and Italian culture, and are strongly linked to the political situation in France from the second half of the century, torn by internal wars. Du Bellay's work will allow us to reflect on the evolution of poetry but also on relations with foreign countries, Italy in particular.
André de Rivaudeau's play, Aman, offers the possibility of studying, through the biblical narrative, the analysis of poetic and theatrical language, a subject of contemporary politics exploited for the stages.
Mme de Stael's novel, Corinne ou l'Italie offers students the opportunity to reconsider the idea that a French author had of Italy. Mme de Stael's novel lends itself to several readings (tourist guide, training novel, art/literature relationship).
Reference texts
It is required to read the critical editions indicated with their respective introductions:

The texts that the teacher will use for the presentation of the period under study will all be published on the Unistudium platform.
Working and / or non-attending students are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course in order to be able to suggest a path, supplemented by other readings and appropriate to their path.
Students with disabilities and/or with SLD who, having completed regular accreditation through SOL, have obtained access to University services, can apply for the compensatory tools ensured by law (e.g. textbooks in digital format; teaching materials in accessible formats: presentations, handouts, workbooks, provided if necessary in advance of the lessons), for which consult https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa.

Educational objectives
The course aims to study the links between classical and biblical culture in French literature from the 16th century to the 19th century.
Through the analysis of the texts in the program, supported by adequate critical instruments, the student must be able to grasp the particularity of the narrative form and to understand the importance of the literary forms adopted by the authors in the program, in particular :
The fortune and role of classical authors and biblical stories in France;
The specificity of the different genres, poetry, novel, translations.
The role of intertextuality in literary texts.
The student must achieve the following skills:
Know how to read and interpret the texts on the program;
Mobilize knowledge of literature from a critical perspective;
Interpret complex literary texts in the light of aesthetic, historical, rhetorical and cultural knowledge;
Interpret the multiplicity of sources, the interweaving between the tension that mythology, the fables of the poets and the religious tradition.
Prerequisites
Students must know French literature in its general evolution, from the 16th to the 20th century and have a level of French language which allows him to follow the courses.
Teaching methods
The teaching method includes lectures in the classroom and, if necessary and according to the instructions of the University, also on the platform.
Meetings are planned, even outside the hours of the lessons, with national and international scholars to offer students further suggestions for further study.
Other information
The teaching uses lectures during which students are encouraged to actively participate with questions, reflections and proposals.
Students will find regularly, on unistudium, the didactic material used during the lessons. This material becomes a full part of the course program.

Learning verification modality
The exam includes a single final oral test which consists of a discussion / interview on the topics covered during the course and in-depth study of the texts recommended in the bibliography.
To take the test, the student must have read all the texts indicated in the program and the test serves to ascertain the level of knowledge, understanding and critical analysis achieved by the student.
The interview will also evaluate the student's ability to communicate what has been acquired, the student's ability to understand, synthesize and criticize. The interview will also make it possible to verify the student's ability to communicate what has been acquired with method and properties of language.


The duration of the interview varies depending on the progress of the test itself. Generally, the student is asked to begin, for each module included in the program, with the analysis of the work that he deems closest to his interests. The other texts of the program can however be subject to discussion.
The exam is held in French.

Extended program
In the first part of the course, we will focus on the literary production of the 16th and 17th centuries, in particular on the poetry of Joachim Du Bellay and on the theater of André de Rivaudeau.
The second part will be devoted to Mme de Satel’s novel, Corinne ou l’Italie.
