Contents Introduction to the theory of electrical circuits. Electrical systems for the production, transport and distribution of electrical energy. Systems for the safety and protection of people from electrocution. Emergency systems in conditions of power failure: continuity systems, generators and combined systems.

Educational objectives Acquire knowledge and skills on electrical systems and in particular on emergency systems in the event of a power failure.

Extended program Course Introduction: objectives, motivations and general description of the topics.
Basic concepts of the electrical engineering. Electric potential, electric current, electric networks with lumped parameters, electric bipoles, first and second Kirckoff's law, linear and time invariant passive bipoles, real bipoles, active bipoles. Electrical circuits: steady-state and transient modes. Sinusoidal alternating mode: symbolic representation, the phasor, the impedance operator, the electrical power in linear bipole networks. Three-phase electrical networks. Electrical power systems and transformer: operating principle.
Systems for the transport and distribution of electricity. Composition of an electricity transmission and distribution system. Power lines, insulators, guard ropes, arresters, switches and disconnectors. General scheme of the transmission and distribution system, general scheme of the electrical cabin. Low voltage power lines, cables capability. Checking the voltage drop. The protections for low voltage systems. Specific let-through energy of a cable. Magneto-thermial switches. Specific let-through energy of a thermal magnetic circuit breaker. Coordination between switches and cables. The fuses. Protection of people from electrocution. Direct contacts, differential relays, IP protection degree. Indirect contacts, earthing systems and lightning protection systems. The TT system, the TN system, the IT system. Passive protection systems, step and contact voltage verification.
Restoration and management of an electrical system in emergency. Introduction on emergency conditions and recovery systems. General diagram of a generator. The alternator, alone mode, operating mode on the power transmition lines. Characteristic parameters of an alternator and applications. Classification of generators and applications. Generators settings: laws and standards. General composition of an uninterruptible power supply. The rectifier and its applications. The inverter and its applications. Batteries and their applications. UPS with "off-line" and "on-line" control, and their applications. General diagram of an emergency system "generator - uninterruptible power supply".
