- The course consists of different parts theoretical and practical, including possibly field excursion/s and seminars by experts in various fields of volcanic monitoring.
The lectures and lab activities and field excursion will cover the topics:
1) The distribution of volcanoes on Earth's surface in relation to different geodynamic environments.
2) Physical properties of magmas. Liquidus and Solidus temperature. Viscosity, density, thermal conductivity, yield-strength, glass transition. Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids.
3) The eruptive activity:
- The effusive eruptions: Main characteristics and hazards associated with effusive eruptions.
- The explosive eruptions: Main characteristics and hazards associated with explosive eruptions
4) The monitoring of volcanoes:
- Deformation of the soil: generality and monitoring techniques.
- Seismicity: generality and monitoring techniques.
- Fluid geochemistry: generalities, monitoring method of volcanic and volcanic-hydrothermal systems, sampling/measuring on field and laboratory analytical methods.
- Mathematical and Statistical Methods for processing data and producing models.
- Methodologies for the construction of numerical models of physical phenomena related to volcanic activity (migration of fluids, eruptive dynamics, processes of dispersion and transport in the atmosphere). Physical principles and application to the main type of “eruptions”
5) Elaboration of risk scenarios, probabilistic assessment of the risk, contingency plans and emergency management
6) the monitoring of Italian volcanoes activity:
-Case-history: Etna, Stromboli, Vulcano, includine spefic seminars of experts.
- the campanian volcanoes: excusion and visit of the monitoring network (if possible)
