- Basic principles of gemmology. Short introduction into geology of¿gemstone deposits. Gemstones fashioning and use in jewellery.¿Diamonds and coloured gemstones. Basics on the main techniques to¿identify and to compare gem materials, treatments and synthetics to¿distinguish between gemstones.

- In order to be able to understand the subject of the course students are¿required to have basic knowledge of geology, mineralogy

- The exam consists of a written and pratical test with closed answer¿aiming to test the level of knowledge reached. Duration 1 hour.¿Learning Objective: basic skills on basic gemmology, ability to identify¿different types of gems, basic expertise on analytical techniques used to¿study gems.

- 1 Basic principles of gemmology: Definitions of gems, their beauty, rarity¿and durability, and aspects of colour and light. Principles of physical¿properties of gemstones. The value and price factors of gemstones.¿Examples Diamond and Tanzanite.¿2 Short introduction into geology of gemstone deposits: The geology of¿gems, where they’re mined and ethics surrounding their extraction. The¿origin and formation of gemstones in different ore deposits.¿3 Gemstones fashioning and use in jewellery: different types of cuts and¿facets with cabochons, beads and other forms. Gemstone treatments:¿heat, irradiation, oil and resin treatments.¿4 Diamonds and coloured gemstones: Silica gems (varieties of quartz and¿chalcedony), feldspars (such as moonstone), organic gems (such as¿pearls, amber and coral).
