Contents | The course “Material Lab” is concerning the theoretical and practical aspects related with the analysis of material properties and in particular of polymer based materials. More in detail the following issues will be treated during the course: Mechanical and rheological properties, UV and IR spectroscopy, microscopic analysis with SEM, analysis and surface modification with Plasma and AFM, deposition techniques of thin film, thermal properties of polymer based materials, electrical and optical properties of polymer based materials. |

Educational objectives | The main objectives of the course is to transfer to the students the knowledge and practical abilities required to analyse the main material properties in particular for polymer based materials. The main knowledge that will be transferred to the students will be: - Basic elements of mechanical and viscoelastic behaviour of polymer based materials - Main features of dynamometer and rheometer - Basic concepts of polymer processing both for thermoplastics and thermosettings - Basic elements of thermal properties of polymer based materials - Main fetures of DSC and TGA instruments - Basic concepts of spectroscopy applied to polymer based materials - Main features of UV and FTIR equipments - Basic concept of technology of the surfaces for polymer based materiuals - Main features of a plasma reactor and AFM microscopy - Basic elements of electron microscopy and SEM features The main practical abilities will be: - Be able to perform a basic tensile mechanical test for polymer based materials - Be able to perform a basic thermal test for polymer based materials - To analyse a stress strain curve as well as DSC and TGA data for polymer based materials - To analyse the min elements of a spectroscopic test for polymer based materials - To analyse the basic elements in SEM and AFM for polymer based materials |
Teaching methods | The course is structured with two didactic methods: face to face and laboratory experiences. Face to face lessons will be dedicated to the theoretical part of the course, the laboratory experiences will be dedicated to the practical and training activities. |

Extended program | The course “Material Lab” points to teach the main theoretical and practical competences concerning the properties and relative measurements instruments in the field of material science and in particular in polymer based materials. The course is structured in two phases; the first one dedicated to the theoretical concepts and the second one dedicated to the visual observation of such techniques in the lab. The following issues will be afforded during the course: Mechanical and rheological properties, UV and IR spectroscopy, microscopic analysis with SEM, analysis and surface modification with Plasma and AFM, deposition techniques of thin film, thermal properties of polymer based materials, electrical and optical properties of polymer based materials. |
