Reference texts - Edoardo D’ANGELO, La letteratura latina medievale. Una storia per generi, Roma, Viella, 2009.

- Complete reading of a work of your choice, in Italian translation, among the following: Boethius (Consolatio philosophiae), Cassiodorus (Institutiones), Beda (Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum), Paolus Diaconus (Historia Langobardorum), Walafridus Strabo (Visio Wettini), Rotsvita (Dialogi drammatici), Abbo de Sancto Germano (Bella Parisiacae urbis), Liutprandus de Cremona (Antapodosis), Rodulphus Glaber (Historiae), Waltharius, Carmina Burana, Eloissa et Petrus Abelardus (Epistolae 1-13), Quilichinus Spoletinus (Historia Alexandri regis), Iohannes de Plano Carpini (Historia Mongalorum), Guillelmus de Rubruck (Itinerarium), Liber scalae Machometi (Il libro della scala di Maometto).
Educational objectives An adequate knowledge of the Medieval Latin literature in its development (6th-13th).
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of “Latin Literature” and “Medieval history”.
Teaching methods Frontal lessons on the subjects selected by the program. Some seminars will be held at the end of the course to discuss the most significant historiographic issues.
Other information Non-attending students will have to consult the teacher at the beginning of the course and before starting the study of the program (see the reception hours in the web-page http://www.unipg.it/pagina-personale?n=patrizia.stoppacci).
Learning verification modality Oral examination in annual sessions to verify the program on the topics of the course. The purpose of the test is to verify the knowledge gained during the course, evaluate the critical skills and the ability to expose the main topics discussed.
Extended program The course aims to provide students with an overview of the history of the Latin Literature produced during the Centuries of the Middle Ages (from the 6th to the 15th Centuries), a review of the main literary genres caught in their critical-historical evolution and a selection of the most representative authors (such as Benedictus de Nursia, Gregorius Magnus, Boethius, Cassiodorus, Isidorus Hispalensis, Beda, Paulus Diaconus, Alcuinus, “Navigatio sancti Brendani”, Walafridus Strabo, Waltharius, Hrotsvit, Liutprandus de Cremona, Gerbertus Aureliacensis, Abaelardus, Heloissa, Hildegardis Bingensis, Trotula de Ruggero, Carmina Burana, Iohannes de Plano Carpinis, Guillelmus de Rubruck, Salimbene de Adam).

Extended program The course will be dedicated to the historical figure of Charlemagne ("pater Europae") and to the complete reading of the "Life of Charlemagne" by Einhard of Fulda, the first early medieval biography dedicated to a Christian sovereign. Ample space will be dedicated to other epic or biographical works of Carolingian interest: the "Karolus Magnus et Leo papa", the biographies of Notkero the Stutterer and of the Poet Saxon, the "Visio Wettini" by Walafrido Strabo, the "Historia Turpini", as well as to texts of prophetic, visionary and odeporic content concerning Charlemagne and his legend.
