- Program: Analysis of 1. linguistic changes that have occurred in the old and medieval Germanic languages; 2. of the principal texts written in these languages; 3. of aspects of the Germanic culture (pre-Christian religion, runes, Christianisation, literacy); 4. of the relationship between Germanic and other cultures (in particular the Greek and Latin ones).

- Knowledge of the program and specific bibliography. In particular, s/he should know 1. the linguistic changes that have occurred in the old and medieval Germanic languages; 2. the principal texts written in these languages; 3. aspects of the Germanic culture (pre-Christian religion, runes, Christianization, literacy); 4. relationship between Germanic and other cultures (in particular, the Greek and Latin ones).
- Prerequisites
- Prerequisites are not necessary. A basic knowledge of linguistics, history and geography is desirable.
- Teaching methods
- Teaching hours in classroom, with help of slides.
- Other information
- Attendance at the course is highly recommended.
- Learning verification modality
- The final exam will be oral (at least three questions on the program). The student should be able to answer the questions confidently and knowledgeably.
- Extended program
- L'insegnamento si propone di descrivere le caratteristiche delle lingue germaniche antiche e medioevali e in particolare dei mutamenti che le contraddistinguono rispetto ad altre lingue indoeuropee. Si propone inoltre di presentare le culture germaniche antiche e medioevali attraverso l'analisi di parti delle principali opere prodotte in seno a tali culture (tra cui, in particolare, la Bibbia gotica, il poema anglosassone Beowulf, la messiade sassone Heliand, il Carme di Ildebrando alto tedesco e le saghe norrene). Si affronteranno i rapporti tra il mondo germanico antico e medioevale e quello greco-latino, dal punto di vista sia culturale (abbandono della religione germanica tradizionale e assunzione della religione cristiana, abbandono della cultura orale e assunzione della scrittura) sia linguistico (ovvero l'apporto lessicale risultante da tali rapporti).
