Lecture notes. - Educational objectives
- This course represents the first teaching of Physics of the Earth of the entire undergraduate program. The main objective is to provide students with the basics of physics of the earth and the tools needed to process and use geophysical data in order to be able to extract information of the subsurface.
The main knowledge gained will be:
- basics of the different fields of Physics of the Earth,
-knowledge related to geophysical data;
-basics processing of data;
-basics of geological interpretation of geophysical data.
The main competence (i.e. the ability to apply the acquired knowledge) will be:
-interpretation of the geophysical anomaly;
-analysis of geophysical data;
-reading and interpretation of geophysical maps. - Prerequisites
- In order to be alble to understand and apply the majority of the techniques described within the Course, it is important to know the basic concept of Physics and Mathematics.
- Teaching methods
- Face to face and pratical training

- The exam consits of a oral exam aiming to ascertain the knowledge level and the understanding capability acquired by the student on theoretical and methodological contents as indicated on the program.
- Extended program
- Introduction to Geophysics: concept of geophysics anomaly and interpretation of geophysical data. Elements of seismology:linear elastic parameters, body and surface seismic waves . Main discontinuities of the Earth. Seismological internal Model of the Earth. Seismic refraction and seismic reflection. Processing of seismic data. Elements of gravimetry and magnetometry. Geophysical Anomalies and their interpretation. Isostasy. Heat flow: generalities. Steady state heat equation. General solution to the steady state heat equation.
