- The exam consists of an written test an oral and pactice presentation.
The written text consists of the solution a number of computational problems and short description of some topics: The has a duration of 2 hours and is designed to avaluate the ability to correctly apply the theoretical knoledge.
The oral exam consists on an interview of about 15 minute long aiming to ascertain the knoledge level and the understunding capability
The technical exam of about 15 minutes consists in the use od the microscope for mineralogy with the study of the principal rock forming minerals - Extended program
- Generaly of Earth. Crystalchemistry: chemical elements, bonding, ionic radii, Pauling's laws, coordination polyhedra. Polymorphism and isomorphism. Crystachemical formula.
Symmetry and crystallography: Symmetry in minerals, Symmetry operations, Symmetry group, Plane group, space groups, symmetry groups without traslation, space point groups, Lattice symmetries, Crystalline system, stereographic projection.
Physical properties: scalar and vectorial properties, density and specific gravity, hardness, piezolectricity. Color in minerals. X-ray diffraction , nature of X-rays, X-ray powder diffraction, powder diffractometers. Identification of powder patterns. Optical microscopy:the polarizing microscopy, relationship between optical properties and simmetry, refractive index, isotropic minerals, uniaxial minerals, biaxial minerals, observation with conoscopic light.
Descriptive Mineralogy: The silicate minerals, the network silicates, the layer silicates, the chain silicates, the isolated tetrahedral silicates, the sulphide minerals, the oxide minerals, the carbonate and sulphate minerals.
