Contents
Basic knowledge of the science of materials, with particular reference to composite and polymeric materials of general interest and odontology
Reference texts
Teachers of Dental Materials and Laboratory Prosthetic Technologies of Italian Universities "Odontostomatological materials and technologies"
Educational objectives
The student of the Teaching must be able to define the main physical and mechanical characteristics of the most 'used dental materials, knowing in depth the compositional characteristics and the main clinical applications.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the principles of general chemistry and basic physics
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons.
Training meetings with practical application of materials of odontostomatological interest
Learning verification modality
At the end of the course the student will be evaluated according to three specific directives:
- Written exam: passing the written exam is considered propaedeutic to the oral examination
- Oral exam, performed to verify the learning of the issues carried out
- Experimental phase: the degree of scientific knowledge will be evaluated, based on the tasks assigned to the student during the Academic Year related to research and presentation activities.
The final mark will be represented by the arithmetic average of the three specific tests carried out by each student
Extended program
Teaching Program
Part I: General Part
-Materials science (materials science and technology, types of materials, competition between materials and their future development)
-Structure and bonds of atoms (structure of atoms, atomic numbers and masses, electronic structure of atoms, types of atomic and molecular bonds)
-Crystal structure and geometry (spatial lattice and elementary cells, main metallic crystal structures, polymorphism and allotropy
-Plastic deformation, recovery and recrystallization (plastic deformations of mono and polycrystalline metals, strengthening of metals by solid solution)
-State diagrams
-Metallic materials, polymeric materials, ceramic materials, composite materials.
Part II:materials in dentistry
-Properties of dental materials (mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical, corrosion properties)
Part II:materials in dentistry
-Properties of dental materials (mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical, corrosion properties)
-Biocompatibility of dental materials (primary and secondary biocompatibility tests, pulp and tissue reactions to dental materials)
-Materials for preventive dentistry (concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, fluoride, toothpaste, mouthwashes, plaque detectors, sealants)
-Materials for conservative therapy (dental cements for substrates, endodontic, fixing for prostheses, zinc-eugenol oxide, based on phosphoric acid, based on polyalkenoic acids, composite cements, root canal cements, polycarboxylated cements, glass ionomeric cements, compomers
-Materials for prosthetic therapy (resins, alloys, ceramics, castings for resin and porcelain, welding and EDM, CAD CAM, coating materials, rotating instruments)
-Materials for implant therapy (titanium, dental implants, zirconium)
-Materials for periodontal therapy (surgical cements, chemical adhesives, bioceramics, fibrin glue)
Part III: Research in dental materials
-The research of materials in dentistry: this section of the course will be dedicated to learning how to perform a correct bibliographic search concerning scientific research in the field of materials used in dentistry and to the development of study protocols on materials science;
