Contents

The course introduces the fundamentals of semantics, lexicology and lexicography, also in relation to the logical-philosophical tradition. It introduces also terminology as a specific field of study, focusing on the relationships between terminology and translation.

Educational objectives

The course has the following learning objectives:
(a) knowledge of the concepts and fundamental methods of semantics and lexicology, with references to the human sciences and logical-philosophical tradition;
(b) knowledge of terminology and tools useful to meta-linguistic description of the lexical-semantic structures.

The main skills (i.e. the abilities to apply acquired knowledge) will be:
(a) describe the units and lexical-semantic structures at various levels with suitable formal tools, particularly mathematical;
(b) elaborate terminology entries on different domains, taking care of the relationship between language and text.
Prerequisites

No specific prerequisites are required to follow the topics covered in the course. We consider very useful knowledge about general linguistics.

The course is organized as follows:
- Lectures on all topics of the course
- Exercises on terminology entries, related to different domains, based on the directions of the Italian Association for Terminology (http://www.assiterm91.it/).

Learning verification modality
The exam includes a final oral examination and the realization of a technical report produced independently.
The oral exam is a discussion lasting about half an hour. It is designed to understand the student's knowledge on the theoretical and methodological issues treated in the program and during the course. Students must also expose in detail their technical reports. Furthermore, the oral examination will allow to check the ability of argumentation and synthesis of the student, especially as regards the reasoned presentation of the work done.
The technical report relates to the second module. Students must develop terminology entries in Italian and in their language of specialization based, in particular, on the directions of the Italian Association for Terminology (http://www.assiterm91.it/); technical domains will be chosen in accordance with the teacher.

Extended program
The course consists of two modules. The first module presents the fundamentals of the discipline, in linguistic and logical-philosophical tradition. The second module introduces terminology as specific field of study, focusing on the relationships between terminology and translation.

FIRST MODULE

The first part of the course introduces the basic concepts of lexicography, lexicology and semantics. It analyzes the structure of the lexicon as open and structured repertoire of linguistic signs and covers the issues of lexicographical description. Then it analyzes semantic relations and special attention is devoted to the categorization process, which will be considered in the cognitive perspective.

SECOND MODULE

The second module is dedicated to the terminology. Starting from the analysis of the semantic-referential dimension, the course presents the history of terminology research, its foundations and relations to linguistics and language sciences. Finally we analyze specialized terminology in linguistic and translational perspective, using different types of technical texts.
