Educational objectives The laboratory aims at providing methods and interpretative-evaluative strategies for developing design skills at the scale of the set-up design for theatre through the control of the compositional techniques of scenography in relation to the drama and direction.
Prerequisites Knowledge of architectural drawing and history.
Teaching methods The educational activity includes lectures, guided exercises (individually or group), revisions, and moments sharing the various work steps of students. A large space will be given to the encounter with theorists and practitioners of theatre sector, with the aim to understand the importance of the relationship between different workers for the good luck of the play.
Lectures will deal with the theory and technique of scenography design, with a specific focus on the modalities of interpretation of the dramaturgy, and therefore of the direction choices, through the realization of scenography.
The course will be supplemented by supplementary seminars aimed at delving deeper into the various set-up design issues (in the field of the exhibit design), intended in this module as a system of theoretical-critical knowledge and techniques required for understanding and transforming the scenic space.
Other information None.
Learning verification modality The exam is preceded by the evaluation of the practical individual and/or group exercises, which are mandatory to take the exam. It consists of an oral test dedicated to the presentation of the teaching path carried out during the various exercise activities, referring to the texts suggested, and the theoretical references studied.
Extended program The course is organized into various activities: lectures, some of which are by invited professors; extempore exercises; in-situ exercises (outside of the classroom); laboratorial activities in the classroom; collective corrections and revisions. In order to carry out all these laboratorial activities, students need to have the necessary hand-drawing and model-making equipment.
The laboratory aims to give the students the basic tools for starting a design process in its interpretive and compositional aspects. Therefore, the following issues will be addressed: the project-related fundamentals of theater history; the generator elements of scenography design in relation to the drama and direction; the narration as a method; from plan and elevations (2d) to the idea of space (3d), with the aid of physical models.
Each topic will be addressed through conveniently organized lectures, exercises, and collective revisions.
