Erasmus Students:
Erasmus students are invited to attend the course. Readings and other teaching materials are also available in English and French; the final exam may be discussed in English or French. A basic knowledge of Italian is, however, required. Please contact the teacher for an appointment before the beginning of the course. - Contents
- METHODOLOGICAL INTRODUCTION (lectures 1-2) - It will focus on the method that characterizes the course, based on the integration between History of Political Thought and History of Political Institutions.
GENERAL SECTION (lectures 3-8) - It will consider some aspects of the theory of forms of government in its historical evolution, with particular reference to the creation of a political lexicon by Greek authors and the use of their works by modern authors. Based on Carlo Carini's book and pdf texts provided by the teacher.
MONOGRAPHIC SECTION (lectures 9-27) - It will be focused on the antithesis between representative democracy and direct democracy in the European political debate over the last two centuries, through the analysis of pdf texts provided by the teacher.
SEMINARIAL SECTION (lectures 28-32) - In the course's last week, the students will discuss readings previously agreed with the teacher, in a seminar format. - Reference texts

- Knowledge and understanding: At the end of the course, the student will gain a good understanding of the debate on the forms of government in contemporary European political thought, with particular reference to the democratic form of government and the connection, in the European history of The last two centuries, between ideological debate and effective institutions.
Ability to apply the acquired knowledge: the student will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to the understanding of the existing links between political theories and institutions at the present stage, in particular with respect to the dynamics based on the opposing / integrating between representative democracy institutions and those of direct democracy. - Prerequisites
- Attending and non-attending student must possess an adequate knowledge about contemporary European history, from Congress of Vienna (1815) to the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989). Notions about Modern and Contemporary History, History of Political Thought and History of Political Institutions will also be useful.

- Direct analysis of primary sources, led by the teacher.

- Attendance is not compulsory. Non attending students will study a different exam's program (see above, "Reference Texts" section).
- Learning verification modality
- The final exam will be held in the form of a 30-minutes discussion about the methods and the subjects of the course. Communicative skills will also be the object of a specific evaluation.
