- Knowledge of the basis of thermodynamics and heat transfer
- Prerequisites
- In order to be able to understand and apply the techniques described in the Course, you must know the general concepts of Mathematical Analysis such as derivatives and differential equations. Moreover the topics of the Course also require to know the basics of Physics such as dimensional analysis, measurement of the physical quantities, the concepts of temperature, power, heat and work.
Knowledge of these techniques represents a mandatory prerequisite for students
planning to follow this Course with profit. - Teaching methods
- The course is organized as follows:
- lectures on all the subjects of the program;
- exercises in classroom that aims at the training for the final written exam;
- description of some instruments showed in classroom (such as
psychrometer, sound level meter, ect.) - Other information
- Attendance of classes is optional but strongly advised.
- Learning verification modality
- The exam includes a written test and an oral exam.
The written exam, which lasts an hour and half, consists in a draft of an argument contained in the course and in the solution of an issue on a topic related to Psychrometry or Heat Transfer.
The test is intended to verify:
i) the ability to understand the problems proposed during the course;
ii) the ability to correctly apply the theoretical knowledge;
iii) the ability to synthesize information;
iii) the ability to explain efficiently the concepts in written form.
The oral tests consist of a discussion of no longer than 45 minutes aimed at
verifying:
- the knowledge of the theoretical methodological content of the course;
- the correct presentation of the applications proposed in the course;
- autonomy in proposing the most appropriate approach for each scope.
The oral exam will also test the student communication skills and his autonomy in
the organization and exposure of the theoretical topics.
The evaluation of the written test is expressed in thirtieths by the Commission,
considering a maximum of 15 points for the theme and a maximum of 15 points for the exercise; the final evaluation is carried out by the Commission as the average value of the written test and the oral exam considering the following weights:
- written test = weight 1/3;
- oral test = weight 2/3. - Extended program
- Heat tranfer: fundamentals and applications. Conduction, convection, radiation and adduction. Thermal transmittance of walls; thermal balance of walls in stedy and unsteady state; heat exchangers, cooling fin. Thermo-insulating materials. Greenhouse effect. Solar collectors.
Applied Thermodynamics: state diagrams, energy conservation law, exergy, thermodynamics cycles and their theoretical performance for internal combustion engines, steam machines, refrigerating machines. Psycrometry. Applied acoustics: architectural acoustics, meterials, measurements. Illuminating technique: Visibility curve. Light sources. Design criteria.
