Educational objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide students with the tools necessary to treat and use geophysical data in order to obtain information about the subsoil.
The main knowledge acquired will be:
- theoretical basis of gravimetric methods;
- theoretical basis of geomagnetic methods;
- theoretical basis of applied seismology;
- theoretical basis of electromagnetic methods.
The main skills will be:
- ability to plan a geophysical campaign;
- understanding and interpretation of a gravimetric anomaly;
- understanding and interpretation of a geomagnetic anomaly;
- treatment of refraction and reflection seismic data and related interpretations;
- processing of electromagnetic data and related interpretation.
In order to be alble to understand and apply the majority of the techniques described within the Course, it is important to know the basic concept of Physics and Mathematics.

Learning verification modality
The exam consists of an oral test of about 30 minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding reached by the student on the theoretical and methodological contents indicated in the program.

Extended program
Geophysical methods and their applicability. Design of a geophysical campaign: identification of the target, selection of the interval stations, disturbance. Data analysis: analog-digital conversion, spectral analysis, convolution, deconvolution, correlation, filtering.
Applied seismology:
Seismic waves, reflection and transmission of incident rays, critical refraction, diffraction, intrinsic attenuation, spherical divergence, scattering, seismic sources, identification and recording of seismic waves.
Refraction seismic:
Half-space and dromochronous of direct waves, horizontal layers, inclined layer, non-planar refractors, surveys, applications and case histories.
Reflection seismic:
Horizontal layer of reflected waves, normal moveout, horizontal layers and rms speed, multiple reflections, survey and horizontal-vertical resolution, data processing, applications and case histories.
Gravimetric method:
Physical principles, gravity measurements, corrections to gravimetric measurements, Bouguer anomaly, interpretative methods (regional and residual field, anomalies due to bodies with different geometries, determination of depth and mass), applications and case histories.
Geomagnetic method:
Physical principles and units of geomagnetism, magnetic properties of rocks (susceptibility of rocks and minerals), the Earth's magnetic field (components from the Earth's magnetic field, temporal variations of the field), magnetometers, magnetic investigation campaign, qualitative interpretation, quantitative interpretation (anomalies due to bodies with different geometries, depth determination), applications and case histories.
Ground Penetrating Radar:
Physical principles, dielectric properties of the material, data acquisition, data analysis, interpretative techniques, applications and case histories.
