Contents
The course aims to illustrate the theory of molecular genetics and its main applications to animals of veterinary interest.

The intended learning outcome is to achieve student independence in evaluating molecular techniques and investigations applied to domestic animals, fostering critical thinking and the ability to create new tests considering the possible variables involved: purpose, cost-effectiveness, population size, etc.

Educational objectives
The course is one of the latest in-depth studies on genetics and, in particular, the only one applied to animals in the degree program.

The main objective of the course is to provide students with the foundation to become independent biotechnologists in interpreting and creating molecular tests and to provide appropriate answers in terms of research, taking into account all the variables at play, including economic ones.

The main knowledge acquired during the course includes:
• Knowledge related to animal genomes and reference databases
• Key markers and their appropriate use for the biological question
• High-throughput methods
• Phenotype-genotype association
• Critical analysis of sector literature
• Basic wet and in silico laboratory techniques
Prerequisites
Background general biology and genetics.
Teaching methods
Lectures and laboratory exercises (wet and dry)
Other information

Learning verification modality
Evaluation is carried out through an oral exam. A typical exam consists in a 30 minutes interview aiming to assess knowledge level and understanding capabilities on theoretical and methodological contents acquired by the student. The oral exam will also test the student communication skills, lexical congruence and consistency when presenting enquired topics.
Extended program
Genome organization and functioning: functional units in complex genomes, transcription and gene expression, mobile genetic elements, epigenetic signals;
Recombinant DNA: manipulation of genetic material, mapping (genetic and physical maps), molecular markers;
New data: Next generation sequencing, assembly of contiguous DNA sequences, interpretation of a genomic sequence; SNP chips and their applications.
In silico test desing.
