Educational objectives The general objective of the course is to provide students with the basics to design, implement and manage the orchards for wood and biomass production (with particular reference to walnut, cherry, poplar and paulownia) to optimize the quantitative/qualitative results, reduce costs and enhance ecosystem services of such plantations (germplasm conservation, carbon sequestration, buffer zones, improving landscape, etc.).
The specific objectives are: - To acquire and process knowledge on morphology, biology, phenology and environmental and human factors interacting to pursue production of high quantityquality and economically and environmentally sustainability.
- Explain the principles and define techniques for controlling development of wood and biomass species with particular attention to planning, planting, soil management, fertilization, irrigation, pruning, disease and pest control, thinning and  final use.
- Provide knowledge on laws, techniques of propagation and training of trees and shrubs  for wood and biomass production in nurseries, with adequate guarantees of genetic quality, health and agronomy. Forest certification.
Prerequisites In order to achieve the objectives of the Course of Tree cultivation it is necessary that the student has passed the exam of General Arboriculture and nursery technique.
In addition, at the beginning of classes or at the beginning of the study, the student should have acquired the basic knowledge of the principles of agronomy, ecology and agricultural economy. This knowledge, in fact, constitute a useful requisite to be able to successfully attend the course and prepare adequately the exam.
Teaching methods The course is organized as follows:
Lectures on the topics listed in the program under "lectures"
Practical training / workshop on the topics listed in the program under "classroom exercises/laboratory"
Field exercises on the topics listed in the program in the "field activities"
Seminars conducted by students of the course: if any (to be agreed with the students and to be included in Practical activities)
Activities in foreign language: if any (to be agreed with the students and to be included in lectures)
Tutorial support activities in addition to teaching hours in number of hours suitable to meet the needs of students
Educational visits and seminars with experts on the topics listed in the program under "educational visits / seminars with experts"
Other information The lesson frequency is strongly recommended.
Reception timetable by agreement with the Professor: Morning and afternoon from Monday to Thursday and Friday morning.

Learning verification modality To ascertain the learning of knowledge related to the teaching, the following methods are planned: an oral test or a written test.
The tests will make it possible to ascertain both the level of knowledge acquired and the ability to analyze and rework it independently in order to address/solve problems concerning the design, planting and management of wood and biomass arboretums. The tests will also allow the student's expository ability to be assessed.
The oral test will consist of a discussion of approximately one hour duration to ascertain the level of knowledge on the contents of the program, the student's ability to elaborate/implement the knowledge acquired, and the critical description of images related to the topics of the program. The oral test will also serve to assess the student's ability to communicate in relation to the ownership of language proper to the discipline and the organization of a personal exposition on the contents of the program.
The written test will consist of at least 2 open-ended questions and critical description of images related to the program topics. The test will last no more than 2 hours. The written test, like the oral test, will ascertain the level of knowledge on the program contents and the student's ability to elaborate/implement the knowledge acquired. This test will also serve to assess the student's ability to communicate in written form in relation to the ownership of language proper to the discipline and the organization of a personal exposition on the contents of the program.

In detail the program of the course is the following:
Arboriculture for high quality wood production
Importance, functions, uses and production of the arboriculture for wood production. Phenological, vegetative and productive behaviors of trees in relation to the environment of cultivation. Carbon sequestration due to arboriculture for wood production. Buffer zones. Criteria for selection of wood species depending on their use and climatic conditions in order to achieve also a high environmental and recreational features. Analysis, planning, realization and management of orchard for wood production. Morphological, phenological biological and functional characteristics, propagation, planting (soil preparation, planting distances, pure and mixed planting systems, intercropping, individual or collective protections) and cultural practices (soil management, fertilization, irrigation, pest and disease control, training systems and pruning, tree thinning) for the rational management and utilization of main tree species for wood production with particular attention to walnut, cherry and paulownia.
Forest certification
Arboriculture for high quantity wood production (poplarculture)
Poplar productions and importance. Choice of species and clones, planting, plant compensation, land management, intercropping, irrigation, fertilization, qualitative characteristics of trunks and pruning, pest and disease control, harvest (traditional, advanced and very advanced: cut down, preparation, extraction and loading of the material), mining the root systems and land rehabilitation, turn cultivation, environmental impact, estimates of production and sales.
Poplar cultivation for biomass
The arboriculture role for the energy needs and environmental benefits.
Poplar in short rotation forestry (srf, short cycle) and in medium rotation forestry (mrf, medium cycle) in energy destination: clone selection and planting material, planting, soil management, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease control, production and harvesting, restoration of soils.
Practical activities
exercises in the classroom / laboratory - Planning systems for wood (bureaucratic process and project); forest certification
field activities - propagation, planting and pruning of tree species wood. Plant and cultivation techniques of orchards for the production of biomass for energy and / or materials for the industry;
Seminars with experts on issues concerning the sector
