- The principal objective of the course is to facilitate a closer engagement between the student and the chemistry applied to drugs, with a view to providing the student with a molecular understanding of the action of drugs.
- Prerequisites
- Students who enter this course should have basic knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry.
- Teaching methods
- Classroom lessons on all topics of the course will be delivered using PowerPoint presentations and videos, which will be inserted into UNISTUDIUM in PDF format a few days before each lesson.
- Other information
- Lectures in the classrooms of the Department of Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology.
- Learning verification modality
- The final examination is an oral examination, which consists of an interview about the topics covered during the course and mentioned in the program. The examination is designed to verify the knowledge level and understanding capability acquired by the student on the basic aspects related to medicinal chemistry and the process of drug discovery and development. The oral examination will also assess the student communication skills. The duration of the test varies depending on the performance of the test itself, with an average duration of approximately 30 minutes.
- Extended program
- Definitions: drug and medicine. Structurally specific drugs. Pharmacodynamics (how drugs work). Intermolecular drug-target interactions. Drug targets: structure and function of proteins (receptors, enzymes, ion channels, ion pumps and transport proteins) and nucleic acids.
Enzymes and drugs: reversible, irreversible, competitive, incompetitive, non-competitive and allosteric enzyme inhibitors. Case study: anti-HIV drugs. Receptors and drugs: agonists (pure or partial), antagonists (competitive, non-competitive, allosteric and irreversible) and inverse agonists. Receptor theories. Concepts of affinity, intrinsic activity, potency and efficacy. Case study: opioid analgesics. Nucleic acids and drugs: intercalating agents, alkylating agents and chain terminators. Nonspecific drugs.
The process of drug discovery and development (from bench to market/bedside). Discovery -> hit compound; Design-> lead compound; Development -> drug.
