- Educational objectives
- The course allows students to acquire the basics of statistics useful both to set up a research and to interpret the results. Data analytics application will enhance the process of learning of the student.
- Prerequisites
- Not required
- Teaching methods
- Lectures and exercises on the methodological part.
- Other information
- Learning verification modality
- Written assessment. The test consists of True/false questions (8), multiple choice questions (7) and 3 short exercises to be solved. The test lasts 45 minutes.
- Extended program
- Definition of statistics. Data sources on sports: Istat, Eurostat, CONI. Surveys on Sport in Italy. Analysis of statistical phenomena: characters, methods, statistical units and collective phenomena. Classifications of the variables: continuous, discontinuous, dscrete, nominal variables. Populations and samples. Probabilistic sampling method (simple random, systematic, stratified, cluster) and non- probabilistic sampling methods. Phases of the survey, experimental design and the questionnaire.
Frequency distributions: simple and double-entry tables. Grouped and ungrouped frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution, relative frequency distribution, and relative cumulative frequency distribution. Graphic representation of simple distributions, bar or tape graphs, histograms, area charts, pie charts, graphs radar, cartograms, Cartesian diagrams. Measures of central tendency: the arithmetic mean, the median, the mode, percentiles. The variability of a distribution: the variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, box plot, concentration, Lorenz curve. Skewness and Asymmetry (positive or negative).
Analysis of the association between two characters: double frequency distributions, dependence, independence, interdependence. Conditional mean and variance. Scatter plot: how to visualize data correlation. Analysis of the association of disconnected qualitative characters. Chi-square index, contingency tables, Cramer's V association. Measure of the dependence of a quantitative character from a discrete qualitative or quantitative character. Measure of the interdependence between two quantitative characters: covariance, Pearson correlation coefficient. The simple linear regression model: functional and statistical relation between two variables, specification of the simple linear regression model, point estimate of regression coefficients, the decomposition of the total variance and the coefficient of determination.
