- On Modern and Contemporary American Poetry
In this course, the works of a range of modern and contemporary American poets will be read and discussed – the list includes, among others, Emily Dickinson, Adrienne Rich, Louise Glück, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Mohja Kahf, Naomi Shihab Nye. The poems will be analyzed in relation to their historical, social, and cultural context and in relation to the themes and issues raised by them – identity, love, faith, spirituality, gender, violence, racial discrimination. The specificity of poetic language will be examined, along with the continuities and ruptures with the literary tradition, poetry as resistance and re-vision, the importance of a feminine cultural heritage. The course will have a predominantly seminar character. - Reference texts
- A selection of primary and secondary texts will be provided to students at the beginning of the course and during class and will be uploaded on the unistudium platform.
- Educational objectives
- At the end of the course students are expected to be able to 1. interpret literary texts in relation to their historical, social, and cultural context; 2. to translate the primary texts and make a formal and critical analysis of them; 3. to effectively communicate the knowledge acquired with argumentative coherence and adequate critical language.
- Prerequisites
- Knowledge of the basic notions related to the analysis of literary texts.
- Teaching methods
- Lectures and seminars.
- Learning verification modality
- Oral exam. The exam will consist of an interview on the texts and topics covered in the course, aimed at verifying 1. the understanding of texts and their contexts; 2. the ability to apply the knowledge covered by the course; 3. the ability to expose and communicate what has been acquired with clarity and appropriate critical language.
