- Contents
- The lessons deal with the diplomatic document (legal acts), in Latin and Italian vernaculars, in all its forms, from the classical to the contemporary age, with particular attention to medieval documentary trends. The main lines of the evolution of documentary practice from the 5th to the 20th century a.C. will then be exposed. The lessons aim to bring students closer to understanding the complex world of written documentation.

A. Bartoli Langeli, Notai, Roma, Viella, 2006 - Educational objectives
- Students will learn to read a diplomatic document (legal act), distinguishing it from a historical document; identify its formal characteristics; understand its internal order; discriminate their functions. Furthermore, he/she will have to know the main historically actual documentary forms; knowing how to arrange them in the historical order that belongs to them; exercise the discrimen veri ac falsi. The underlying objective, beyond the required notional system, is, however, to refine he/she spirit and exercise of criticism (historical, textual, analytical).
- Prerequisites
- Diplomatic imposes on the student a hard body of knowledge: first of all it is advisable to have notions of history for the entire chronological period considered (5th-20th centuries of C.E.); a basic knowledge of the Latin language is also useful (although not strictly necessary) (for those who do not have it, this can be remedied by increasing the part in the vernacular).
- Teaching methods
- To goals the objectives and acquire the required skills, exercise of reading and interpretation will accompany the theoretical part through frontal lessons. These exercises will be carried out with reproductions of documents that will be provided from time to time by the teacher: students will therefore have to equip themselves with special devices capable of reading common digital image formats (jpeg; pdf). Under the permission of public or private archives, educational inspections will also done.
- Other information
- Students with handicap certificates will be able to take advantage in the study of A. Pratesi, Genesi e forme del documento medievale, Roma, Jouvance. In connection with the disabilities they document, they will benefit from simplifications in the selection of documents and in carrying out the exam tests.
Students with certified extra-university constraints that prevent them from regularly attending lessons must add the book to the listed texts: M. Ferraris, Documentalità. Perché è necessario lasciar tracce, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2009. Without prejudice to all the requirements valid for those attending lessons. - Learning verification modality
- The verification of the skills achieved will happen through an oral examination which involves the reading and detailed analysis of one or more acts belonging to the types surveyed and the chronological period considered in Latin and in the vernacular languages. In particular: reading conduct the student to understand the forms and contents of the document. Since a fundamental means for the correct understanding of the authenticity and origin of the document is its date, the student's task will be to provide the exact reconstruction of the chronology of the example submitted to him, implementing the procedures for verifying the datings expressed and demonstrating know the dating systems applied (all this is obtained from the study of the manuals and is reflected in the Intrinsic Forms section of the program). The authentication tools are of different aspects. Therefore, recognizing them and knowing their history is of basical importance. Equally unavoidable will be to demonstrate the ability to identify the document's partitions and recognize their functions. The judgment on the student's test will be based on knowledge of the program, on his ability to apply the critical competences, on the argument's strength, logical run of reasoning, on the correctness of language, on the capacity for analysis and synthesis. A standard duration of the exam cannot be foreseen, because everything depends on reading ability and readiness for analysis. As a general and generic indication, it ranges from half an hour to one hour.
