Contents
The course aims to promote the study of the history of the German language. The following topics will be analyzed from a diachronic perspective: 1. the formation of German vocabulary, 2. sentence structure.

Educational objectives
The course is dedicated to students who already have a good knowledge of the German language, its grammar, and vocabulary. The course aims to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the various phases in the history of the German language, from its earliest attestations to contemporary German.

Knowledge

- Knowledge of the various lexical contributions that have occurred throughout the history of the German language.
- Knowledge of the morphological and syntactic changes that have occurred, analyzed based on texts from various periods.

- Knowledge of regional linguistic differences in relation to linguistic changes.

- Knowledge and use of databases for the analysis of the German language.

Skills

The course contributes to the deepening of previous linguistic knowledge, giving it a historical dimension, and to the development of skills to reflect on and understand changes over time. It will provide students with specific and appropriate vocabulary to describe linguistic changes.

Lectures, seminars, and exercises; active participation by the students are required.

Other information
The exercises at the CLA are an integral part of the course: they will focus on deepening comprehension and oral expression.
Learning verification modality
The final exam consists of at least three questions on the programm of the course and the corresponding bibliography.

Non-attending students will be required to write and discuss a paper of at least 5 pages on a topic of the course.
Extended program
The course will analyze the various phases in the history of the German language, from its earliest attestations to the modern era. The formation of German vocabulary will be examined, highlighting the influences of various languages (primarily Latin, French, and English) during its development. Morphological and syntactic changes that have characterized German over time will be highlighted. Texts from different periods will be read and discussed in class.
