- The course is divided into two sections.
In the first (24 hours) we will introduce some general notions of geolinguistics (language, dialect, variety, repertory, continuum, linguistic area and isoglossa) and specifically look at the classification and internal description of the main dialect groupings of Italy.
In the second section (12 hours) we will focus on some dialect texts or research through seminar meetings. - Reference texts

- Teaching contributes to the realization of the educational objectives of the course of study, specifically along the following lines:
Knowledge and Understanding. Knowledge of the main notions of sociolinguistics (variety, dialect, variation, norm, bilingualism, diglossia, linguistic code); knowledge of the classification of the Italo-Romance linguistic space and its varieties; knowledge of the main phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical features of Italo-Romance dialects; knowledge of the methods of field investigation and data collection in dialectological research.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. Ability to conduct field research in linguistics, collecting and analyzing first-hand data; ability to use the tools of the discipline correctly, also with a view to their possible use in teaching activities at the school and university level. Ability to employ linguistic terminology related to phenomena of Italo-Romance varieties; ability to read the map of a linguistic atlas and identify the main isoglosses; ability to recognize the linguistic physiognomy of the main Italo-Romance varieties.
Autonomy of judgment. Ability to examine a text with dialect elements and reconstruct its linguistic origin.
Communicative skills. Ability to communicate, with the correct terminology, the characteristics of the Italo-Romance dialect framework.
Learning skills. Preparation for study and research for the purpose of employment in the fields of journalism, advertising, science, institutional and cultural outreach. - Prerequisites
- Have taken an examination in History of the Italian Language (or Italian Linguistics).

The exam, lasting about 30 minutes, is divided into three sections: analysis of the dialectal features of a given area; description of the dialect of a region of Italy; and commentary on a text analyzed in the second part of the course.
The assessment of the exam takes account of the ability to move with autonomy and awareness within Italian dialectology. - Extended program

In the first section (24 hours) general notions of sociolinguistics and geolinguistics: language, dialect, variety, repertoire,continuum, linguistic area and isoglossa; the opaque dialect; the transparent dialect; the archaic dialect; dialect and intellectual culture; dialect in the city; spoken dialect and written dialect; sources and tools for knowledge of dialects; classification and internal description of the main dialectal groupings of Italy (settentrionali, toscani, mediani, alto-meridionali, meridionali estremi).
