Contents | Instrument system and measurement methods for load, displacement and strain. Mechanical testing of materials: strength, elastic modulus / stiffness, failure mode, field, post-breking phase, displacements, strains, load, toughness. Testing of: reinforced concrete structures, masonry structures, wooden structures, glass structures. Monitoring systems for structures. |

Educational objectives | The main aims of this teaching is to provide students with laboratory and testing procedures for construction and industrial materials. |
Prerequisites | Students are expected to have a competent knowledge of Structural Mechanics. |
Teaching methods | Lectures on all the subjects of the course and laboratory activities. |

Learning verification modality | Oral exam - of about 30 minutes long - concerning all the topics of the corse. The completeness of the answer, the argumentative rigor and the ownership of language will be assessed. |
Extended program | Instrumentation system and measurements methods. Mechanical testing of materials: strength (Yield, Ultimate) elastic modulus / Stiffness Yield Stress / Ultimate Strength, Failure Mode, Local Displacements or Strains, Toughness Stress / Strain Response Testing of reinforced concrete structures: -surface hardness methos -penetretation resistance methods -pullout test -beakoff test method -ultrasonic pulse velocity method -combined methods Testing of masonry structures: -double flat jack test -diagonal compression test -compression test -mortar analysis - sonic test - entoscopic test - thermographic surveys - tests with "ground-penetrating" radar. Testing of wood structures: -reological properties, defects, biotioc and a biotic attacks, shrinkage, humidity, knots, etc. -bending tests -compression tests -tensile tests. Surveys of existing wooden structures: test with penetrometer, ultrasonic tests, temperature and humidity tests. Bending strength of structural glass. Monitoring system: Vibrometry, optic fiber systems with Bragg sensors, digital image correlation systems. |
