- Contents
- Structure and reactivity of coordination complexes and organometallics. Fundamental aspects of catalysis: kinetic principles and types of chemical bonds and elementary steps of catalytic processes. Molecular and heterogenized catalysts. Catalysis in processes for the production of renewable fuels. Cross Coupling Catalysis. Gold Chemistry.
- Reference texts
- Teacher-provided reading material.
- Educational objectives
- Knowledge of the subjects of the program. It is expected that students are capable to: 1) describe the structure and reactivity of coordination complexes and organometallics; 2) critically analyze the operation of catalytic systems; 3) illustrate the role of catalysis in processes relevant to the production of renewable fuels and organic catalysis.
- Prerequisites
- Bachelor in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, CTF and Chemical Engineering.
- Teaching methods
- Face-to-face on all subjects of the course and individual laboratory experiences.
- Other information
- Students with special needs, disabilities or specific learning disorders are strongly encouraged in browsing the University's webpage (https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa) to agree with the Lecturer on all their specific requirements.
- Learning verification modality
- Oral test (ca 40 minutes) aimed at verifying that students are capable to critically analyze the structure and reactivity of coordination complexes, the operation of catalytic systems, based on structural and mechanistic considerations, and the possibility of generating renewable fuels.
- Extended program
- General properties of coordination complexes and organometallics.
Reactivity of coordination complexes and organometallics bearing alkyls, aryls, hydrides, carbonyls, phosphines, pyridines, carbenes, olefins, alkynes, etc.
Oxidative addition, reductive elimination, migratory insertion, hydrogen elimination, nucleophilic and electrophilic addition to coordinated ligands.
Catalytic processes of industrial relevance: alkene hydrogenation, hydroformylation, alkene methathesis, polymerization of olefins, ecc.
Catalytic processes for the production of renewable fuels: de-structuration of biomass, natural and artificial photosynthetic processes, photo- and electro-hydrogenation of CO2, water splitting, water oxidation, ecc.
Fundamental reactions in palladium-catalysed cross coupling. Organometallic gold compounds and their role in homogeneous catalysis.
