There are planned pathways, materials, and/or assessment methodologies consistent with the needs of disabled and/or DSA students
Educational objectives The course will allow the student to acquire knowledge about the adverse and toxic effects, as well as the therapeutic bases and the administration route of the most important drugs. The student will be aware of those factors that influence the desired pharmacological and undesired toxicologic effects. It takes into account also the handling of those drugs that are potentially harmful for the technician.
Prerequisites basic principle of general chemistry
Teaching methods The lessons are frontal, with direct interaction and occasionally discussions on the topic, with examples drawn from the practical activity of a laboratory technician.
There are planned pathways, materials, and/or assessment methodologies consistent with the needs of disabled and/or DSA students
Other information Compulsory course attendance.
Office hours: fridays 12-13
Learning verification modality oral exam, with 2 questions to be answered in 7-8 minutes

Contents Definitions: drug, desired, unwanted and toxic effects. Pharmacokinetics:
description of absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of
drugs. Pharmacodynamics: definition of pharmacologic receptor, classes
of receptors and known mechanisms of signal transduction. Overview of
clinical pharmacology.
Reference texts R. Paoletti, S. Nicosia, F Clementi, G. Fumagalli - Farmacologia generale e molecolare.
Moreover, the presentations used during the class are available to the student and can be downloaded from Unistudium.
Educational objectives The general pharmacology is the study of the fundamentals of drug action that evaluates the relationship between body and drug, and analyzes the general mechanisms of interaction between the two systems.
This course aims to provide the fundamental knowledge of pharmacology, by focusing the attention to the routes of drug administration, the pharmacokinetic processes that the drug undergoes once administered and the mechanisms of action of a drug.
The student will achieve the following skills:
1) understanding the concept of drug bioavailability
2) calculating the correct dosage of a drug
2) understanding the mechanism of action of a drug
3) understanding the relevance of the dose-effect concept
4) rational usage of a drug to minimize the toxic effects.
Prerequisites The student must have knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general
pathology. The student must also comply with the required prerequisite.
Teaching methods Lectures on all the topics of the course.
Other information The student can reach the teacher at the following email address:
giada.mondanelli@unipg.it
Learning verification modality The exam will be an oral test lasting about 15 minutes. The test is aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding get by the student on the the course program. Through the oral test, the teacher will also verify the language skills and student's ability to organize the argument.
Extended program Definition of drug. Features of the conventional drug. Natural and
synthetic drugs. Biodrugs and biotechnological drugs.
Primary, side, unwanted and toxic effects. Cellular basis of
pharmacokinetics (cell barriers and drug transport across membranes).
Absorption and routes of drug administration. Distribution, metabolism
and elimination of drugs. Interaction between drugs. Pharmacodynamics:
receptors and receptor activation theories. Definition of agonist, antagonist and allosteric modulator. Methods to study the biological responses of a drug, dose-response curves, potency and efficacy of a drug. Binding studies and definition of drug affinity.
Classes of receptors (G-protein coupled receptor, ionic receptor, receptor associated with an enzymatic activity, intracellular receptor). Mechanisms of signal transduction
