- Contents
- Description of most important primary and secondary arthropods pest
food of animal origin; methods of monitoring and intervention in order to
optimize the control of the production chain and parasitological
quantitatively reduce the losses of the products and their quality decline. - Reference texts
- Material provided by the teacher.
- Educational objectives
- The primary aim of the module is to provide students with an adequate
knowledge of the main arthropod pests of food for the entire food chain
and methods of monitoring and intervention.
The main knowledge gained will be related to the morphology and the life
cycle of pests and provide the essential elements to optimize the
parasitological control of the production chain and reduce losses of food.
The main abilities acquired by students will be:
- identify macroscopically the species more frequent pests in the food
chain;
- prepare entomological slides for microscopic observation of arthropods;
- perform inspections in a food farming in order to identify the critical
points for the input and the proliferation of pests. - Prerequisites
- Because the course is highly specialized and sectorial, in order to its
proper understanding the student must have basic knowledge of the
Veterinary Parasitology and Techniques the feedingstuffs / Animal
Nutrition.
This knowledge derived from obligatory courses followed previously by
students who choose this matter (which is one of the optional courses of
the last year). - Teaching methods
- Theoretical lessons (70%).
Practical activities and visits to food companies (30%) - Learning verification modality
- Oral exam consist in a discussion lasting about 40 minutes aimed at
ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding achieved by
students on the theoretical and methodological implications of the course
(morpho-biology of the parasitic species treated, diagnostic modalities
depending on the type of business involved in the infestation, types of
treatment and control methods).
In addition, in order to assess the ability to apply the skills acquired by
the students, this is supplemented by oral discussion of a possible
context of infestation, proposed by the teacher (for example, how to
proceed in case of infestation Tyrophagus putrecentiae in a company
which produces hams). - Extended program
- Theoretical lessons:
Morphology and biology of insects and mites.
Arthropods infesting food: primary and secondary pests in industrial food
production, warehouse storage and retail.
Monitoring techniques and divalutazione risk production in agroindustries.
Reading adhesive panels of light traps.
Analytical control of confined spaces of production and storage through
the Direct Examination of Environmental Dust (EDPA).
Techniques for pest control, main pesticides and intervention strategies
targeted.
Arthropods of food pathogens of zoonotic interest.
- Practical activities:
Identification of artropods (pests or pathogens) of foodstuffs.
Preparation of microscopic preparations of infesting mites.
Visit to agro-food companies, feeders and/or companies for disinfestation.
