Contents | The mating programs: examples in dairy and meat. The organization of the productivity controls. Conduction of the main tests for the evaluation of breeding animals: the performance test, the progeny test and the sib test. Animal breeding using molecular genetic tools. |

Educational objectives | To provide students with knowledge of the different evaluation techniques of breeding used in different species. Also make students aware selective choices with particular attention to mating programming. |
Prerequisites | Even if prerequisites are not planned, the course necessarily requires knowledge of principles of Animal breeding. These knowledges are supplied in the Animal breeding course (II year of course). |
Teaching methods | The course is organized as follows: -lectures on all subjects of the course; - practical exercises in the classroom about the matings programming in the livestock systems. -educational visits: practical of morphological evaluation at the ANABIC genetic station seminars performed by breeder associations technicians, etc.. |
Other information | Attendance to the lessons: Optional but strongly advised. |
Learning verification modality | The exam consists of an oral test. The oral test lasts for about 20 minutes and it consists on an interview to ascertain the knowledge level and the understanding level on both the theoretical and the methodological contents of the course program; the oral exam also tests the student's capability to expose the topics with appropriate words. |
Extended program | The matings programming: examples in dairy and meat. The choice of female and male replacement. Using software tools for matings programming. The organization of the productivity controls. Conduction of the main tests for the evaluation of breeding animals: the performance test, the progeny test and the sib test. Use of the top sire catalogs for genetic breeding. Animal breeding using molecular genetic tools. |

Contents | Theoretical lessons will focus on defining the term technopathy and its contextualisation in the intensive breeding of cattle, sheep and goats, pigs and fish. The pathophysiological aspects of stress will be taken into consideration as essential elements in the determinism of technopathies, and I will benefit from the maintenance of the state of animal welfare in the context of the productions. Particular attention will be paid to the immunosuppression resulting from stress as a determining factor in certain technopathies. These topics will be addressed in order to deepen the study of intervention techniques |

Educational objectives | The aim of the module is to provide students with knowledge related to the technopathies of intensive farming. Specifically, students will be introduced to understanding how the intensive breeding system can interfere in various ways on the welfare of the animal, favoring the onset of certain diseases that can not only dequalify animal production, but also significantly affect the business economy. The final objective is to identify adequate intervention procedures on company management that allow to optimize the production system, especially with regard to product quality. |
Teaching methods | The course is articulated: - in lectures held by the teacher responsible for the module; - lectures held by experts in the intensive livestock sector of some types of animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, fish). - in study outings at intensive farms, in collaboration with veterinarians and staff working within the farms. |

Extended program | Definition of Animal Welfare Stress, immune system and health status of the animal Predisposing factors for the onset of technopathies in intensive farming systems of different species (cattle, pigs, sheep and goats,): feeding, management, health / biosecurity programs, facilities, etc. Technopathies as a consequence of methods of rationing and distribution of food that are not appropriate for different animal species; chemical contamination of food and beverage water (aflatoxins, nitrites and nitrates); Structural factors of hospitalizations that can favor the onset of technopathies: type of flooring, number of drinking troughs, type of litter, ventilation and lighting systems. Heat Stress Lameness Management of farrowing and milking parlors and related pathological conditions. Methods for monitoring the welfare / health status of the animal. |
