Student Assignment: Preparation of an educational PowerPoint presentation related to a chosen work of art, aimed at a specific audience selected by the student (elementary, intermediate, advanced level). Depending on the chosen level, the PowerPoint must be clear, accurate, educationally effective, and balanced between visual and explanatory text. Regardless of the chosen level, a bibliography of the consulted sources is required.
Program for Non-Attending Students:

Students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLDs) who have completed regular accreditation through SOL and have gained access to University services may request the compensatory tools provided by the regulations (e.g., digital format textbooks; educational materials in accessible formats: presentations, handouts, exercise books, provided in advance if necessary). For more information, please consult the page https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa. For requests, students are invited to contact the professor, who will put them in touch with the Department's Disability and/or SLD Referent (Prof. Alessandra Di Pilla: alessandra.dipilla@unipg.it). - Educational objectives
- Course Objectives
The course aims to provide students with initial tools to achieve a greater critical awareness in approaching the subject, selecting the most suitable and relevant critical instruments for the specific nature of each artistic artifact, and aligning with each student's cultural inclinations.
Knowledge
The goal is to develop an understanding of the main methodologies for analyzing and interpreting works of art. This knowledge will be complemented by further disciplinary learning in Art Criticism History, scheduled for the third year of the course.
Knowledge Level: Considering the varied or somewhat elementary knowledge of art history among students from different secondary education institutions and the placement of the subject in the second year of the course, the educational approach introduces the subject gradually and simply.
Teaching Method: The complexity of case studies will be presented concretely and gradually, using practical examples to illustrate various research approaches. Emphasis will be placed on the educational value and the different methods of presenting the case, beneficial for a comprehensive critical analysis.
Skills
Critical Awareness: Students will learn to frame artworks with greater critical awareness, deepening their understanding of authors, works, and phenomena in relation to the original historical context, liturgical environment, subsequent exhibition contexts, public and critical reception, as well as the roles of patrons and collectors.
Abilities
Critical Reflection: Ability to understand and reflect on the complexity of historical and artistic phenomena, at a level suitable for university students.
Understanding and Expression: Ability to grasp and articulate the problematic and hypothetical nature of proposed reconstructions.
Communicative Skills: Development of various communicative skills:
Acquisition of specialized and technical vocabulary, often not previously learned, to convey the specificity of the subject.
Argumentative critical skills that highlight the unique critical nature of the artwork.
Narrative expression skills, accurate yet targeted and engaging, capable of capturing the attention of a broader audience and adapting to new forms of social, digital, and television communication. - Prerequisites
- A basic understanding of the historical and cultural development of art history in Italy. No specific background is required, as the discipline is entirely new and absent from the secondary school curriculum.
- Teaching methods
- Frontal lessons with interactive dynamics and frequent student involvement, guided visits to museums. Meetings and conferences with figures from the cultural heritage sector such as museum directors, archivists, and regional officials.
Students with disabilities and/or specific learning disabilities (DSA), after consulting with the instructor, may request educational materials in accessible formats (presentations, handouts, exercise sheets), which will be provided in advance if necessary, as well as the use of other technological aids to facilitate the study phase. For general information, please refer to the University Services at the page https://lettere.unipg.it/home/disabilita-e-dsa and contact the Department Coordinator (Professor A. Di Pilla).
In the academic year 2023/2024, the University of Perugia has provided that 11 categories of students could attend distance learning courses. Interested students are encouraged to check the possibility of attending classes remotely on the Procedure for Distance Learning (DaD) page at Università degli Studi di Perugia (unipg.it). - Other information
- Office hours: Pending receipt of the annual class schedule, office hours are set for Wednesdays from 3 to 5 PM. Please contact the instructor via email to schedule an appointment.
- Learning verification modality
- Oral exam, lasting approximately 20-25 minutes, consisting of a discussion based on assigned bibliography and a direct presentation using the educational PowerPoint, which must be sent to the instructor via email several days in advance. The assessment will focus on: argumentative rigor, completeness and appropriateness of language, depth of analysis, and the ability to contextualize artists and artworks, reflecting the critical complexity of the artworks.
Students with disabilities and/or specific learning disabilities (DSA) who have been duly accredited through SOL and have access to University services may benefit from compensatory tools, dispensatory measures, and inclusive technologies as provided by regulations. These accommodations should be requested and agreed upon with the instructor well in advance of assessments. For more information, please refer to the page https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa and contact the Department Disability and DSA Coordinator (Professor Alessandra Di Pilla: alessandra.dipilla@unipg.it). - Extended program
- The course aims to offer various methodological approaches to artworks, tracing their historical genesis, critical evolution, and their interaction with parallel disciplinary fields such as philosophy, sociology, and sciences, which have significantly influenced their development and perspectives. The direct examination of several case studies will be undertaken, focusing this year on works attributed to Raphael, which are particularly complex and extensively debated in both ancient and contemporary historiography.
Research methodology lessons will be conducted to build confidence in both digital and traditional investigative tools necessary for compiling bibliographies and structuring research fields. This structured path, including lectures and practical seminars with specialized personnel in Library Science, is designed to prepare students for thesis writing. Additionally, guided visits to major cultural institutions and research centers dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, such as the State Archives and historical libraries, will be organized.
Furthermore, to familiarize students with the diverse professional opportunities available with a degree in Cultural Heritage, meetings and conferences will be arranged with prominent figures from institutions responsible for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage in Umbria, including the Superintendent's Office, national and civic museums, and the Umbria Region. - Obiettivi Agenda 2030 per lo sviluppo sostenibile
