Contents

A) General part:
History of Greek literature from the archaic age to the Roman age. Literary genres: main representatives and works; times, places and occasions.
B) Ample space will be given to the study of the texts of archaic and late archaic lyric authors (including Archilochus, Sappho, Anacreon) and to the reading of parts of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.

Educational objectives

At the end of the course the student knows a selection of texts from Greek literature and knows how to analyze them from a historical, philological and literary point of view. It orients itself in the broader historical, social and literary context in which ancient texts are placed, and has expertise on the authors of Greek literature and their time. In particular, he knows how to understand the texts of archaic lyric poets and tragic authors and knows how to insert them into the cultural contexts of the time, in the occasions of composition and performance, grasping the underlying problems and themes.

Knowledge of the main phenomena of the Greek language and basic elements of dialectology. Knowledge of the general lines of Greek history

Learning verification modality

The test will consist of understanding the syntactic structure of a sentence taken from a classic text. Knowledge of the main lines of Greek Literature is considered preliminary. The vote will range from 30 to 18 depending on the ability to understand the texts in the original language (30-29 excellent; 28-27 very good; 26-25 good; 24-22 fair; 21-20 more than sufficient; 19-18 sufficient); praise will take on the value of 'special mention', that is, it will not simply indicate excellent preparation, but rather excellent preparation enriched by happy personal contributions. It should also be noted that a translation learned by heart does not mean understanding: to demonstrate understanding of texts, the ability to analyze them and identify their structure is fundamental; the result of an exam prepared with translations learned by heart is considered absolutely negative.
Extended program

The lessons on the institutional part will mostly be frontal, and the main concepts will be illustrated by examples taken from the scheduled texts. The second part of the program instead includes reading of Greek texts and comparison with the main Italian translations of archaic lyric authors (in particular Archilochus, Anacreon and Sappho) and of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.
