- Lessons will focus on the analytical categories necessary to understand and to answer the fundamental questions posed XXth century political history, from an italian and european perspective.

- The following textbook in italian is recommended:
F. BARTOLINI, B.BONOMO, A.GAGLIARDI, L'Europa del Novecento. Una storia (Carocci, 2020)
If italian language skills are felt not to be adequate, a university level textbook in english or in another language can be used. If that's the case, please contact me in advance. - Educational objectives
- Students will have solid knowledge of important historical events in XXth century European and Italian history and will be able to understand the historical dimension of contemporary trends in political and social history.
- Prerequisites
- General knowledge of the main focus points of a high school curriculum in modern european history is presumed.
- Teaching methods
- Face to face lessons, seminars, history videos, discussion of papers, movies and history videos, written tests.

- Learning verification modality
- Written tests and/or oral presentations are planned for attending students and their evaluation will contribute to the final grade. The final oral examination consists of a 15-20 minute dialogue with the teacher on themes discussed during lessons.
Exams will ascertain the ability to correctly expose and critically evaluate facts, periodizations, interpretations, causes and consequences of historical facts.
For non attending students the oral exam will be longer and the questions will be on all arguments covered by the textbook.

- Lessons will focus on the analytical categories necessary to understand and to answer the fundamental questions posed by XXth century political history, from an italian and european perspective.
The relevant introductory topics of XIXth century history are: the crisis of multinational empires and the birth of national States in Europe, the birth of major political ideologies, colonialism and imperialism, the evolution of european constitutional systems.
The XXth century is the true core of the course and major events will be treated extensively: the two World Wars, the russian revolution, the crisis of democracy and the birth of totalitarian systems, the cold war and its consequences in Europe and abroad, the process of European integration, foundation and evolution of the italian republican political system, the fall of the Berlin wall.
A special focus in social history and women's history will try to address specific interests of Social Service students.
