- The aim of the course is to provide students to acquire the necessary knowledge on how to restrain an animal, how to perform a general and specific examination in the clinical approach to the surgical case, while adequately interpreting the reported symptoms. Student should be able to perform a clinical examination of each systems: locomotor, integumentary, genito-urinary, digestive, respiratory, visual, auditory and nervous. Student should be able to interpret instrumental and diagnostic imaging investigations.

- Educational objectives
- D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The student have to -acquire the knowledge necessary for the recognition of the symptoms and the correct methodology that allows to reach the diagnosis of the major surgical pathologies -acquire basic knowledge of instrumental and laboratory investigations. D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of the training the student will be able to: - perform neurological examination and examination of auditory and ophtalmic apparatus - perform clinical examination of locomotor apparatus (lameness) - perform clinical examination of the mouth and of the digestive system - perform clinical examination of the respiratory system - perform clinical examination of the integumentary system D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT At the end of the training the student will be able to: - assess the presence of pathologies of surgical interest - assess the symptoms of the main diseases of surgical interest. D4 - COMMUNICATION At the end of the training the student will be able to: - organize, prepare and exhibit, to an audience made up of people of equal level of preparation, a presentation on a clinical case of surgical interest with their own evaluation supported by appropriate arguments, - support an adversarial process with people of equal preparation and experts in different issues, of a regulatory, scientific, procedural and / or technological nature, - demonstrate language properties in both written and oral form, as well as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job interviews. D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS At the end of the training the student will be able to: - consult and understand scientific texts, bibliographic updates, normative dictations, so as to use them in contexts not only usual for the profession, including research, but also original ones. - possess a sufficiently broad mastery of the subject to guarantee an acceptable basis for continuing professional updating through ongoing lifelong learning. - Teaching methods
- Theoretical activity: in the classroom on all the topics listed in the program. Practical activity: guided exercises at the facilities of the veterinary teaching hospital on the main topics included in the program and on the clinical cases received. Self-directed learning activity: • Collection of the signalment and anamnesis/history • General Objective Examination (EOG) • Particular Objective Examination (EOP) of specific systems • Evaluation of symptoms • Identification of collateral tests

- Surgical case study method; Patient restraint (1 h). Anamnesis (2 h). Objective Examination of Individual Apparatus: Locomotor: examination sem. Locomotor apparatus; Semiotic injections; Static and dynamic tests (3 h). Tissue application: evaluation of primary and secondary injuries; Cutaneous biopsies (2 h). Genito-urinary: catheterization, cystocentesis instrumental exams (3 h). Digestive: Observation of food intake, swallowing, and progression of the bolus (2 h). Examination of the oral cavity, esophageal and gastric probing (2 h); Acute abdomen (3 h); Respiratory: respiratory noise (2 h). Neurological examination (3 h). Examination of the auditory device (2 h). Examination of visual apparatus (2 h).
