Starting from the new requirements of the property market, legitimised and codified by the Salva Casa Decree, the topic of mini-homes will be addressed through the study of examples of contemporary architecture and as an opportunity for experimentation and synthesis of the knowledge acquired by students, with the creation of a furnishing project for small living spaces based on the principles of ergonomics. Educational objectives |
The course aims to provide students with the most comprehensive tools to guide them in their future professional practices in modern interior design and furnishings (fixed and mobile). The course aims to provide students with the tools to develop designs for comfortable domestic spaces of minimal size. Specific aspects of interior design will therefore be addressed and explored in depth, with a focus on materials, colours, finishes, and natural and artificial lighting. Prerequisites |
Good knowledge of CAD drawing is required. |
Teaching methods |
The course is divided into three interconnected phases. The first is theoretical and analytical (lectures and/or seminars) and focuses on the theme of the year. The second is more strictly ‘practical,’ with classroom exercises in ‘planning,’ and the third consists of presentations and discussions dedicated to public reviews of mid-term tests. |
Other information |
The examination will assess the overall work done by individual students, both through mid-term tests and through their specific contribution to the theme of the year. |
Learning verification modality |
Assessment will be based not only on mid-term and final examinations, but also on ongoing dialogue with students during class hours. |
Extended program |

The course aims to provide students with the tools to develop a design for a comfortable domestic space of minimal dimensions. Specific aspects of interior design in relation to ergonomics will therefore be addressed and explored in depth. The course is divided into three interconnected phases. The first is theoretical and analytical (lectures and/or seminars) and relates to the theme of the year, the second is more practical with classroom exercises, and the third consists of presentations and discussions dedicated to public reviews of mid-course tests. Research into the existenzminimum, starting with the modern movement, has always been an opportunity for experimentation, both to respond, as is the case today, to the growing demand for affordable housing and to the demand for an alternative, experiential lifestyle in closer contact with nature. In minimal spaces, the ergonomics of spaces and furnishings becomes an even more pressing issue. Starting from an extreme but highly topical case, students will individually develop a project concept, documenting all possible references selected during the initial research phase conducted not only through architecture and design but also through other arts (visual arts, multimedia, cinema, etc.), and a spatial solution on a scale of 1:50. The creation of study models (digital models are also permitted) is also required. The project must be accompanied by the study of one or more specific details and be adequately represented according to a layout that will be provided during the course. |
