Educational objectives
Applied criminology: how to conduct research and intervene on issues of deviance and crime in society 1. Analysis of violent criminal behaviour: how a person becomes a “dangerous violent criminal” 4. Restorative justice: how and why to “change perspective” on crime and its consequences
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of criminological and sociological theories. For students of Investigation and Security Sciences, it is recommended that you have first passed the exam in Criminology and Sociology of Deviance.

Other information

Students with disabilities and/or SLDs are asked to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course. ‘If students wish to take the exam in a year earlier than that scheduled in the study plan, they are advised to attend the course and take the exam in the first available exam session after the course has ended, in accordance with the semester in which the course is scheduled.’ Lectures will begin on 26 September 2025. Unless there are any changes, the timetable will be as follows: Monday 10am-1pm; Friday 11am-2pm.
Learning verification modality
The exam will assess the following: - understanding and knowledge of the course topics; - ability to critically analyse criminological issues from a scientific, ethical and social perspective; - ability to use sociological and criminological language in relation to the phenomena investigated. For all students, the exam will be written and structured as follows: - a section with open and closed questions; - a section involving the development of a research project based on the topics covered in the course.
Extended program
Initially, the course will provide a comprehensive and analytical overview of the origins and developments of applied criminology, seeking to provide the tools necessary to develop a research project proposal in the field of criminology. Subsequently, violent criminal behaviour and restorative justice will be analysed through some of the most relevant criminological perspectives in the international scientific landscape.
