Literature, Bible, Myths Biblical culture and classical culture in French literature from the 16th to the 20th century through the analysis of myths and characters in the texts on the program: Caïn, Saül, Judith, Deborah. First and second parts. During these years of triumphant formalism, the authors of the New Novel subjected mythical elements to systematic fragmentation within the structural economy of the text. Subsequently, the reuse of mythical sources was no longer limited to the renewal of formal structures but rather involved the questioning of agreed ideological and moral values. With reference to this context, the course will consider two particularly representative cases of mythical rewriting after the Fifties: Michel Butor and Michel Tournier.

Educational objectives

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The course aims to study the presence of classical and biblical culture in French literature. Through the analysis of the texts in the program, supported by appropriate critical tools, the student should be able to grasp the particularity of the narrative form and understand the importance of forms from the ancient and biblical traditions: the fortune and role of classical authors and biblical narratives in France; the specificity of different genres: poetry, novels, travel narratives, and guides; and the role of intertextuality in literary texts. Regarding the third part of the program, the course also aims to study the importance of mythical and biblical rewriting in modern literature. The student should be able to understand the formal and ideological work carried out on mythical sources used by 20th-century authors, with particular attention to the role played by forms of intertextuality in literary texts with a program. The student must also situate this exercise in the literary and cultural context of the modern era. The student must achieve the following skills: Know how to read and interpret the texts on the program; Mobilize knowledge of literature from a critical perspective; Interpret complex literary texts in light of aesthetic, historical, rhetorical, and cultural knowledge; Interpret the multiplicity of sources, the intertwining of the tension between mythology, poets' fables, and religious tradition.

Prerequisites

To understand literary and critical language, students must be familiar with French literature in its general development, from the 16th to the 20th century and have a level of French language which enables them to follow the courses.

Teaching methods

The course is organized by frontal lessons. Students will also be asked to participate actively with the presentation of critical readings which will be agreed and coordinated with the teacher.

Students will regularly find the teaching material used during the lessons on unistudium. This material becomes an integral part of the course program. Learning verification modality

LEARNING VERIFICATION MODEL The exam consists of a single oral examination covering the three parts of the program. The exam: oral conference on the subjects covered during the course and studied in the texts in the program. The colloquium aims to verify the level of knowledge, skills and critical capacity of the student. The duration of the exam is closely linked to the performance of the student. Students with disabilities and/or with SLD who, having completed regular accreditation through SOL, have obtained access to University services, can apply for compensatory tools, dispensatory measures and inclusive technologies ensured by law, to be requested and agreed with the teacher well in advance of tests and exams.
