- The course aims to reconstruct the processes of nation-state formation from the nineteenth century to the present day, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe.

- Extended program
- The course will begin with a study of the development of the concept of nationhood, before analyzing the birth and development of European nation states from the 19th century to World War I. It will then examine how the national question was present during the Cold War, finally arriving at the re-emergence of nationalist ideals as a driving force in continental politics after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the USSR: the return to nation states 15. A new radical nationalism? The wars for the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia 16. The erosion of Russia, Russia's reaction: the Caucasus and Ukraine
