Type of study-unit Obbligatorio (Required)
Language of instruction Italian.
Contents Sources of health information. Contents of articles published in research journals according to the IMRAD format (Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion), presentation of some examples. Databases. Literature review (systematic reviews and meta-analysis).
Reference texts Lecture notes and the slides provided by the instructor. Please note that the slides are concise and do not cover all topics exhaustively. For a more comprehensive understanding of the subjects discussed, the following reference and supplementary textbook is recommended: “Statistica per discipline biomediche” – Stanton A. Glantz. McGraw Hill Education, 2007. (with CD-ROM). ISBN: 9788838639258.
Educational objectives The course aims to introduce the student to the conceptual and methodological foundations of epidemiological research and evidence-based medicine (EBM). At the end of the course the student will be able to carry out a bibliographic search and interpret the results presented in scientific articles published in the literature.
Prerequisites Conoscenze di base relative alla statistica descrittiva e alla metodologia epidemiologica.
Teaching methods Face-to-face lessons.
Learning verification modality Written exam
Extended program Basics of Medical Statistics: - Numerical values ¿¿and modalities of a variable: qualitative and quantitative variables. - Collection of information and its synthesis. - Measures of central position and dispersion indices. - Sample / population: statistical inference. - Standard Gaussian. Hypothesis testing: H0 vs. H1. - Statistical tests: t-Student, ANOVA, Chi-square test. Epidemiological Methodology: - Basics of epidemiological methodology: definition and objectives. - Data sources. Frequency measures: mortality and morbidity rates. Mortality tables. Age pyramids. - Study design: observational and experimental epidemiology. - Descriptive and cross-sectional studies. Frequency measures: incidence and prevalence rates. - Analytical studies: cohort and case-control. Causal and/or non-causal association. Association measures: relative risk and odds-ratio; population attributable risk. - Experimental studies: preventive trials and randomized clinical trials and megatrials.
