- Educational objectives
- LEARNING OBJECTIVES Knowledge: This course introduces a deeper knowledge of the literatures and cultures of the Portuguese language through, in this case, an immersion in contemporary urban fiction of Brazil. Special focus will be given to works by Antônio de Âlcantara Machado, Maria Carolina de Jesus and Luís Ruffato. authors who, at various times during the 20th century, with a language of great impact and innovation, were able to capture and critically represent the contradictions of an unequal society that was rapidly industrializing, leaving entire segments of its population on the margin. Skills: To know how to frame authors, works and phenomena in relation to historical and socio-cultural contexts, as well as public and critical reception. To be able to analyze and communicate the main phases and authors of Brazilian and Portuguese literature with a good knowledge of the specific vocabulary. Capabilities: Contribute to the development of communication skills, the application of one's knowledge and the refinement of learning practices. To mature an adequate capacity for critical judgement also in function of autonomous research and in-depth study paths. The knowledge acquired at the end of the course can be applied by students in a future professional context: in school teaching following the qualification processes, in cultural institutions, in publishing and literary translation.

- Extended program
- An analysis and reflection will be offered on one of the most vital strands of contemporary Brazilian prose, namely that in which authors establish a critical and confrontational dialogue with society, reflecting the complexity of the moment and the crisis that the great South American country is experiencing. It is a literature that incorporates, in terms of form and content, the social context of the country's large cities. Short stories and novels by various writers will be analysed, but especially “Brás, Bexiga and Barra Funda” by Antônio de Âlcantara Machado, “Quarto de despejo: diário de uma favelada,” by Maria Carolina de Jesus and “Eles eram muitos cavalos,” by Luís Ruffato. In these works, a particular regard will be given to the compositional structural mechanisms of the texts also in their relationships with the socio-historical context that serves as their setting.
