Children and adolescents in literature, and the phenomenon of YAL lit.
Reference texts
Students are supposed to read and study Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex 2002. Those who cannot attend classes will have to add one of the following novels: André Aciman, Call Me by Your Name, 2007; C. McCullers, The Member of the Wedding; J. D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye; Afas Nafir, Reading Lolita in Teheran.
Educational objectives
Students are supposed to gain deep knowledge of 19th and 20th century classics of children's literature and Young Adult Lit.
Prerequisites
Having good knowledge of 19th century classics of children's literature.
Teaching methods
Traditional classes, film analysis, classroom debate.

Gli studenti dovranno dimostrare di aver letto e studiato il romanzo oggetto del corso, ovvero: Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex, Mondadori 2003 e di saperlo inserire in un quadro storico letterario che parte da Henry James e arrivare ad André Aciman, autore di Chiamami col tuo nome. Gli studenti non frequentanti dovranno aggiungere un romanzo a piacere a loro scelta tra: André Aciman, Chiamami col tuo nome, Guanda 20008, Carson McCullers, Invito a nozze; Azar Nafisi, Leggere Lolita a Teheran, Adelphi 2004. Inoltre, chi non potrà frequentare, dovrà fare una ricerca da concordare con il docente e presentare oralmente i risultati della ricerca (non è obbligatorio presentarla scritta, è obbligatorio presentarla oralmente, ma se lo si ritiene utile, può essere presentata in forma scritta). Testi critici saranno forniti dal docente all'inizio del corso e saranno caricati su Unistudium.
Learning verification modality
Final oral exam.
Extended program
The course deals with the theme of adolescence in American Literature. Students should be familiar with such classics as "Little Women", "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Catcher in the Rye". In order to take the exam, students will have to read 2 of the 20th novels presented during the course, i.e. T. Capote's "Other Voices, Other Rooms", J. D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" and Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird".
