Educational objectives To provide the Students of the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery with the knowledge of Microbiology able to guarantee skills and competences required for the achievement of the essential levels of professional performance.
Prerequisites Knowledge of Biology and the basics of Immunology.
Teaching methods The course is organized in face-to-face classroom lectures on all topics indicated in the syllabus.

Special bacteriology: Enterococcus, Bacillus, Clostridium, Listeria, Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium, Neisseria, Enterobatteriaceae, Vibrio, Pseudomonas, Legionella, Helicolbacter,Treponema, Mycoplasma e Ureaplasma, Chlamydia.

Structure and composition of viruses. Pathogenetic mechanisms of major viruses responsible for infection in humans. Host interaction (pathogenesis and host immune response). Main antiviral drugs and general principles of virological diagnosis.

Special virology: main families of viruses of clinical relevance. Aetiopathogenesis of viral infections.
Picornavirus, Poliovirus, Rhinovirus, Coronavirus, Orthomyxovirus, Paramyxovirus, Retrovirus (HIV), Togavirus, Flavivirus, Virus dell’Epatite A,B,C,D,E, Herpesvirus, Adenovirus, Papillomavirus.

Educational objectives To provide students of the Degree in Medicine Surgery with the opportunity to attend the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory for a practical in-depth study of the knowledge of the discipline.
The knowledge of the general principles and the skill to obtain biological samples for microbiological analysis.
Prerequisites Compulsory attendance
Teaching methods Internship at external clinics of the Complex Microbiology Structure (groups of 4 students)

Theoretical and practical exercises in the laboratory of the Complex Microbiology Structure. Students will be divided into groups (4 per group), the duration of each exercise will be 3 hours.
Other information Attendance is mandatory.
Lessons will be held at the Struttura Complessa di Microbiologia, AOPG.
Learning verification modality Compulsory attendance
Extended program Frequency in outpatient clinics for external users. Learning of sampling techniques of biological samples including the conjunctival, pharyngeal, auricular, urethral, vaginal, cervical, rectal, wound swab, blood samples.

Attendance at the laboratories of the S.C. of Microbiology. Learning and execution of the main methods of isolation, identification of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites. Evaluation of susceptibility testing to antibiotics.
