Educational objectives
This course aims to provide students with the fundamental concepts of theoretical and evolutionary Paleontology, as well as the relationships between Geology, Biology, and Paleontology. The fundamental principles of paleontology enable students to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge, allowing them to interpret the current natural system through the study of evolutionary processes that have occurred throughout geological time. From a strictly geological perspective, paleontology serves as a tool for the relative dating of sedimentary rock systems, providing geologists with essential information for understanding the evolution and physical transformation of the Earth's system.
Teaching methods
Face to face
Other information
The course does not include laboratory exercises.
Learning verification modality
Oral exam. The exam consists of an oral test of about 30 minutes in order to understand the capability acquired by the student on theoretical and practical contents of the program. The exam will also test the communication skills and the capability to corelate the theoric and practical knowledges.
Extended program
Introduction and history of Paleontology. Taphonomy (necrosis, biostratinomy, and diagenesis). Science of Classification. Fossils and evolution. Fossils and paleoenvironment. Fossils and stratigraphy, biostratigraphic procedures. The geographical distribution of fossils. Paleoenvironments. Fossils and stratigraphy. The geographical distribution of fossils.
