The course aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and theories of the Internet and Internet studies. The course provides interdisciplinary knowledge and expertise in the field of Internet Studies, with an emphasis on the most recent lines of theoretical reflection and empirical research, as well as those established in international contexts.

Educational objectives
Internet Studies is an interdisciplinary research field that investigates the social, psychological, pedagogical, political, technical, cultural, and artistic aspects of the Internet and related digital technologies. The course introduces some key concepts that are useful in understanding the dynamics of information in today's society.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required.
Teaching methods
Three lessons per week. Classroom activities include lectures, project work, and discussions.
Other information
Daily newspaper reading (paper or online) is recommended. Frequency is strongly encouraged.
Learning verification modality
Oral interview. The oral test lasts about 30 minutes and is designed to assess the student's level of knowledge and comprehension of the theoretical and methodological topics covered in the programme. The oral test will also allow the student's communication skills to be verified, with a focus on adhering to public speaking guidelines.
Extended program
The course is ideally divided into three sections. The first section will illustrate and discuss the evolution of the internet, the web, and social media, taking a long-term view and emphasising continuity and discontinuity with mass media studies paradigms. The second section, dedicated to theories, will present the main theoretical and interpretative frameworks of processes and phenomena within the macro- and micro-sociological scope. The third section will look at the perspectives of internet studies. Topics related to web cultures will be discussed, with a focus on digital platforms and social network sites, the emergence of specific social aggregates, the logic behind media manipulation, and algorithm and AI research.
